- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Tutoring, by its very nature is a one-on-one interaction tailored to the student. Typically, a student comes to see me with a problem, section, lesson, topic that is troubling. Perhaps they failed the last test, etc. For example, a student may announce that (s)he doesn't know what's going on in class, or homework is too difficult, or there is an upcoming test ... it depends. I typically start by asking the student to try a problem while I am watching, so I can see where the breakdown is occurring. This forms the springboard for the lesson. Often the issue isn't what is presented - say, an inability to do the homework on rational expressions, may instead become a lesson on how to handle fractions. Sometimes, I have students open the book and together I walk the students through learning how to read a math book (not the same as reading a non-math text) - so that the students can use all available resources. Before the end of the lesson, I always make sure that the student can independently solve the problems. I want the student to know where (s)he can find additional information/examples/problems. I feel that my value-added is my ability to translate the concepts into something that the student truly understands. The key component is to make sure that the student learns to work independently.
