Introduction
Hello and welcome to Treehouse Music Studios! I offer guitar and voice lessons, specializing in personalized approaches to study for adults and adolescents who have found it unsatisfying to learn from a textbook. I begin working with every student by engaging them in a discussion about their goals, their musical heroes, and their experience of music. From there, we dive into your favorite songs and learn them inside and out, with the eventual goal of giving you free creative expression. Music is about connecting your entire mind and body to the instrument, so that a musician can become a channel for pure experience. To that end, I teach not only theory, not only chords, not only riffs, but also embodied and psychological methods to deepen the connection between you and music. I am available for remote lessons or in-person lessons in Philadelphia. These lessons are available for $75 an hour, $60 for 45 minutes, or $45 for half an hour.

Before we started working with Baylor, my son, Ian, was apprehensive to start learning the guitar. It carried along of sentimental emotion for him, since his late grandfather gave him his guitar. From the first lesson, Baylor shared his joy for music with Ian in an empathetic and energetic way. The kid was hooked from there. Baylor has been thoughtful, funny, and clear, making the basics relatable for a 12 year-old. Ian has a hard time making mistakes and I can't tell you (as a parent) how amazing it is to hear his teacher celebrate mistakes as integral stepping stones. I'm not sure he knows it, but Ian is learning a lot of life lessons under the guise of mastering a G chord. He makes Ian feel seen and has helped make his guitar a friend during these challenging times - and ALL over a laptop screen! I can't recommend Baylor enough and we are looking forward to continuing with him as school starts up again.

Baylor is a passionate and extremely well rounded musician. He instructed me on guitar (acoustic & electric), vocals, and songwriting. We covered a diverse array of topics including technical skills, music theory, the creative process, and the practical application of all these. I was always impressed with Baylor's ability to provide guidance and insight on in so many areas related to music.

I worked with Baylor for a year and learned more from him than my years of music classes in grade school. For some music concepts I thought maybe I was unteachable but because he is an excellent teacher who is able to break down complex subject matter into something understandable and able to be applied practically, I always reached a point of understanding. The best part of it is he makes music fun, exciting, and accessible no matter what your proficiency is across the different areas of music. Because of his teaching, I feel like in our time together, I have become two-fold the musician I once was. Since, I was in an exploratory phase of my journey we touched on music theory, guitar, music production, singing, performance, and the music business in general. I use the fundamentals he taught me in all these areas in my music and will have them with me forever as I now feel confident myself as a musician. I recommend him to anyone interested in learning music whether for hobby purposes or professionally.

Baylor is kind, generous, open, engaging, and dedicating to helping you achieve your goals. He brings enthusiasm and passion to the subject matter he teaches and will go above and beyond to create a personalized lesson plan to help you get to where you need to go. In just a few lessons, Baylor brought me from 0 to 100 with the basics of electronic song composition. As someone who has always been interested in writing and recording music, Baylor helped to fill in really important knowledge gaps I had by giving me everything he had in his toolbag to offer. It opened up an entirely new way of thinking about music composition for me. Furthermore, Baylor helped me to BELIEVE IN MYSELF. and that is invaluable! I HIGHLY endorse Baylor as a personal tutor.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

My guitar instruction is backed by 4 years of teaching, 18 years of live performance, and 24 years of musical experience. Having enriched the musical journeys of over 100 students, I offer a unique learning experience that goes beyond typical guitar instruction, transforming challenges into growth and creating skilled, confident musicians for $75 an hour. If you want a discount, we can discuss a lesson bundle.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

My specialization lies in unorthodox, personalized lessons for adolescents or adults designed specifically for students who have found classical teaching methods dull or inaccessible. I do not teach from textbooks, but through experience. The first thing we do is talk about your goals. The second thing we do is play a rhythm game. The third thing we do is learn one of your favorite songs. The fourth thing is to deconstruct and understand the song so that you can start playing and improvising.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

My 18-years of live performance, 4 years of teaching experience, and degree in Anthropology and Music from UC Berkeley have instilled in me a unique teaching methodology that blends practical performance techniques with socio-cultural musical understanding. I have played in (and written music for) country groups, funk bands, punk bands, hip hop groups, singer songwriter duos, pop ensembles, avant-garde improvisational groups, and even a Sephardic Jewish Music rock band. I am probably most knowledgeable about indie folk and classic rock, but play and listen to everything.
