Jerry is an extremely kind person, a thoughtful poet, and a generous editor. His perspectives and approach to poetry and publishing are refreshing and much-needed.
I first met Jerry in a writing class. I was a graduate student in the MFA program at Oregon State university. Jerry’s thoughtful response to the other students’ work showed a maturity above and beyond our peers, I automatically assumed he was a graduate student, and was surprised to learn he was not. He showed a familiarity with contemporary poetry, writing, and theory, and he was so well-read that he out-classed even the most advanced students and writers. His composure and thoughtfulness were such a gift to me, that I looked forward to classes with him. In fact, we took up an immediate friendship and quickly began exchanging our writing projects outside of class time. He was so engaged with poetry, and not just his own poetry which is often the case among students, but with all poetry.
