Introduction

Guide on the Side provides support for students and writers of all ages. My own professional experience includes teaching math, language arts, ELL and social studies—both in person and online—and I have an extensive network of tutors if a particular student needs something I can’t provide. Nancy is an angel. She was not only accommodating to the needs of my demanding academic PhD program, but she became a forever friend. Nancy was dependable and always ensured dissertation drafts were reviewed, and feedback was provided to the committee on time. I can't even begin to describe how helpful Nancy was for me! I found her on Thumbtack when I was searching for Editors in my area, and she was very quick to respond. I had decided from previous quotes I'd gotten, that I couldnt afford to have my manuscript edited at this time. When I told her that, she offered to edit a sample portion for free in order to help me pin point pieces of my writing that I could work on. I was so appreciative of this offer and was astounded by how attentive and detail oriented she was, even on something I wasn't paying her for. I would definitely recommend her to anyone for any reason, and I will definitely be going back to her when I want to get an editor!

I'm so glad I reached out to Guide on the Side for help with my two teens! I'll admit up front that I'm a rather "picky" mom--I have high expectations and I'm careful about who I allow my kids to spend time with. Ms. Karmiller did not disappoint! All of our interactions were professional and so, so supportive. Ms. Karmiller is a compassionate, patient teacher, Her developmental and educational expertise is evident. After spending a little time with each child, she seemed to have an intuitive feel for how to best tackle each child's unique needs. She clearly has a knack for developing supportive and instructional relationships with children. Both of my children felt cared for and respected. Their time with her was "fun" and did not seem like work, even though they got a lot done. One teen was struggling with a high school AP class, and over a period of several months, Ms. Karmiller provided direct tutoring as well as instruction on specific study strategies tailored to my child's learning style. That child raised her class grade by two letter grades! It is such a joy to see her feeling more independent and confident now. I think she's even got the courage to try other AP classes in the future. My other child needed assistance during the transition between high school and college. Ms. Karmiller provided life skills training (guidance on financial budgeting and developing routines) and job search assistance (resume building, job applications, and networking/interview coaching). These are things I'd normally try to help my child with myself, but as is typical of this age, the child wanted to be independent and do these things by himself. It was a great comfort to me as a parent to know that he had another trusted, knowledgeable adult to turn to with questions. He got to feel independent, and I got the security of knowing my child was adapting well during the transition. In addition to meeting with him as scheduled, Ms. Karmiller went above and beyond, checking in with him regularly to inquire about his progress. She also updated me so I stayed "in the loop." I highly recommend Guide on the Side to other parents who want to help their children with school or emerging adult skills.

I cannot even put into words how much Nancy has helped me. I have known her for over 15 years and she has been a life coach for me through my toughest times and never gave up on me. She has done so much for me from helping me write papers to helping me through family struggles. She helped me quit smoking many years ago by helping me deal with my stress in healthy ways such as working out and making general healthier choices. I would highly recommend Nancy to anyone looking for a life coach, a tutor, or a personal trainer! I am now a successful professional in the dental field and I feel like I owe so much to her!

Nancy is by far one of the best teachers I have ever had. After dropping out of high school and then going to an alternative school, where I knew absolutely no one, Nancy was instantly by my side and took amazing care of me. If it wasn’t for her love for her students and genuine care for them as people, I really don’t think I would have made it to graduation. Now that I’m in college, she still continues to check on me and offer help if needed. I will forever be grateful for her.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Tutoring jobs take into account time spent with the client as well as basic preparation, though in some cases additional preparation may be needed, in which case this would be discussed in advance of billing. Editing jobs are usually billed on a "per hour" basis. In general, on-going or particularly lengthy jobs may eligible for discounts, depending on the circumstances.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a free half hour phone consultation, after which, if the client determines that we are a good fit, I write a proposal detailing my recommendations. Then we get started, and monitor and adjust as needed. Communication is key, always:-)
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in English and a Master’s in Education.
