Introduction

I have been playing bass for about 20 years and am fluent in all styles including rock, funk, jazz, latin, jam, fusion, country, folk, bluegrass, classical and anything else! To help you learn we will play from the music of a diverse range of artists including Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, Green Day, J.S. Bach, Charlie Parker, Jaco Pastorius, and anyone else you would like to listen to or play. I try to take a holistic view of music and the bass and will help you improve on and learn rhythm, sight reading, ear training, theory, and harmony. In addition, I will limit my number of students so that I can focus on each one individually. Music lessons should be fun, and I am happy to teach what you want to learn! I love music and I think that it is a great way to make your life better as a person, as well as a great way to meet people. Some of my best friends have come from bands I have played in and some of my best times have come from shows I've played, and I would love to share this experience with others!

Going into my first lesson with Alex, I was excited, but pretty nervous. I've played other instruments in the past, so came into it with some musical background, but had never touched a bass. Part of the uprights appeal to me is knowing how hard it is to master. However knowing myself and having taken lessons on other instruments in the past, I know those first couple lessons on any instrument (let alone a particularly difficult one) can be frustrating. Alex was super patient with me, and made me feel really comfortable. He was very encouraging, and made me feel good about what I was learning. On the other hand, Alex was just tough enough that it pushed me to keep trying until I got it right. I left knowing a couple scales (pretty cool), and with blisters on my fingers. I'd say my first lesson was a win, and I'm looking forward to the next.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $45/hour. While I can accommodate shorter (or longer) lessons, I feel 60 minutes is the best way to get as much as possible from each lesson.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
For the first lesson I will get a feel for what the student's current skill level and their goals are with the instrument. Lessons should be fun, so I will teach what students want to learn and what they will enjoy practicing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing bass for 20 years and have been educated via both private lessons, different classes, and a lot of independent music study related to bass performance and music theory. I have been teaching bass on and off for the past 15 years to students with a variety of different playing experience and styles.
