Depending on the patient's condition and its duration, treatments may be given anywhere from one to two treatments, and up to 10. If no significant improvement is seen within 10 treatments, I will refer to an MD for further assessment, as is mandated by law. - What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Listen...Listen...Listen. Let the patient tell the story. I find acknowledging a patient story with a nod or a "and then what" or "continue on" shows that the practitioner is focused. Write as little as possible, using key words to joggle the mind, and most importantly, maintain eye contact. With these in play, one would be amazed how relaxed a patient is and how much of the story is told. Ask questions if more info is needed. Bed side manners still exist, but I find less and less of it with our allopathic physicians. My work is patient-centered. I take the time needed to get a thorough medical history. With my education and experienced, coupled with my integrative/alternative medicine education/experience I find results to be much higher. I have the best of both worlds when it comes to medicine.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned my graduate degree from Southwest Acupuncture College, Albuquerque, NM, a four year program I completed in 2 years and 1 semester (3 semesters per year). There, we are required approximately 3200 hours of didactic classes and supervised clinic. A national exam is required to pass before earning the license to practice, which we are required 90 CEU's every four years to renew. To maintain an active license, each state's acupuncture state board requires continuing education credits. These CEU's are required yearly prior to renewal. For certification in AcuDetox, a week long seminar, 71 hours, is required with a written and practical. My Acudetox certification is renewed every two years, and is current. Occasionally, I am a guest speaker, on a live radio show, with the Ohio Physicians Educational Network, Cleveland, OH. The one hour show is to educate the listeners on the benefits of acupuncture on a particular pathology. My academic lectures have been presented at the Cleveland Clinic in front of Medical students, those in Residency, and Physicians. I have spoken to American Veterans at the Cleveland Clinic's VA Hospital.
