The combination of her expert sense of style and extraordinary taste, and the confidence to not just execute our preconceived design ideas but rather to push us to consider options outside of our box, has made Helen a resource we have, and will continue to, come back to time and time again. Her work has been outstanding in all respects, as the results reflect. I am a real estate broker, and primarily sell apartments in the very large complex where I live. It is important that my apartment is as comfortable and inviting as possible, as I often bring clients to see it, so they can envision what they can do with the less attractive unit they might be considering. From the kitchen - now about 15 years old but looking like it was done yesterday - to the soft soffit lighting and exquisite baths Helen designed, people are taken with how much can be done and how wonderful their future home can look. On numerous occasions my clients have become Helen's clients, and have thanked me for the recommendation. When we outgrew our vacation house and became frustrated trying to find something that would better meet our needs, we decided to tear down all but the foundation and enlarge and rebuild it. We got Helen involved from the very earliest planning stages, and, working with our architect and contractors, she was instrumental in creating an award winning home. She was easy to work with, but exacting, and would not let us accept work that was only 95% perfect. Helen sourced the materials we used, from concrete counters to ceramic and stone bathroom tiles to plumbing and lighting fixtures and flooring, designed our kitchen and baths, and worked with and guided us in selecting the furnishings and accessories. Her imprint was on almost every aspect of the house, which no doubt resulted in its selection, by its readers, as the Overall Favorite in an on-line Architectural Digest competition. Helen Grubel has been a pleasure to work with, and we consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to do so. I have no hesitation giving her the highest recommendation I can.

We had worked with other designers over the years and there was always a problem with communication. Helen helped us with our city apartment and our country house without any miscommunication . Working on a budget posed no problem for her. She intuitively understood our vision and provided options that we would happily live with for years to come. She is excellent at follow-thru and follow-up even after our project was completed.

It is with great enthusiasm that I write this letter of reference for Helen Grubel, my interior designer. I have known Helen for almost 10 years and she has been fantastic to work with. When we initially met, I was planning a renovation of part of my home. Midway through that project our home was destroyed by a fire and we needed to rebuild it entirely. Helen literally helped with every aspect of the re-design. She was and continues to be a pleasure to work with always strives for perfection. As we were dealing with numerous vendors and tradesman, it was not unusual for something to catch Helen’s eye that was troublesome, even if my husband and I were pleased with the initial result. Helen holds everyone accountable to the highest standard, herself included. She has incredible taste but makes certain to give the client multiple options that reflect their aesthetic preferences. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
In general I charge a 25% commission on all furnishings that I have specified for the project, It is on the net cost There is an initial design fee per room of $750- if appropriate, this provides the client with a birds eye view of the space we will be doing, it includes all measurements, and furniture layout. Alternatively If the client prefers, we can work per hour at $150/hr
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I set up an interview with the potential client in their space at a convenient time for them. I listen carefully to their needs, budget and time frame , we discuss how I would proceed with their project and discuss my services further. When hired I make an appointment to measure their entire space so I can give them a comprehensive floor plan that we can review together, to make sure the plan is exactly what they want. If a renovation is their requirement the process is the same.
