Introduction
Emir Gamsizoglu is a concert pianist with a unique story; he started to play the piano at the age of 20, after quitting his career as a professional basketball player in the Turkish league. He was the oldest student ever getting accepted to Istanbul State Conservatory's Piano Performance Department. After his training in the conservatory, he studied with pianist Huseyin Sermet in Paris which made him understand the difference between studying in a "school" and with a master musician outside of "school". With this inspiration, he found his unique technique for teaching piano, which is based on creating a personal connection between the listener/player and the music. Apart from his solo recitals and chamber music concerts, Emir Gamsizoglu is known with his interdisciplinary projects about classical music, like "Unwritten on the Scores", "Drama in Beethoven" and "Chopin's 200th Birthday". Emir G. has been teaching piano for the last 15 years. Because of his extraordinary story, he is a unique teacher especially for adults. His music appreciation series under CLASSICAL 4 ALL are getting attention both in his homeland Istanbul, where he travels often for concerts, and in New York where he currently resides. Contact us to enroll in CLASSICAL 4 ALL's group class or private instruction. Classes are open to students of all levels and for ages 10+.

I met Emir through his FREE Classical 4 All performances at Caffe Vivaldi (which are wonderful, please join us!) - I was very excited to learn he was willing to teach me, as I'd been looking to get more serious about the piano for a while at that point. I hadn't played for a teacher in almost ten years, and Emir turned out to be exactly the type of teacher I was hoping to find. I believe that's because of two things: 1) Emir and I are similarly passionate and interested in music! You should probably have these qualities if you're taking piano lessons. Everyone will be happier if so :) 2) Emir is able to gauge what I am looking for in piano lessons and deliver appropriate guidelines, encouragement, and constructive criticism. If I were a different person, he would handle teaching me differently. My experience of Emir is that he's very: professional down to earth passionate exacting talkative. This works for me! I get a lot out of every lesson, and I feel like I've made a lot of progress in changing the way I perceive and practice music, which was a goal of mine going into lessons. I have every confidence that he can teach a wide variety of people at any age or level of experience/skill.

I've been taking lessons from Emir since last summer (2014) and have really enjoyed it. I learned as a child but hadn't played in years but have been amazed at how quickly it's come back to me. Emir truly lives and breathes classical piano music, both technique and history. He offers a very practical but detailed approach to getting the best sound out of each note, rather than just learning to play all the notes in the correct order. On top of that, he's a very warm, thoughtful and easy-going person, full of little stories from his studies and people he's met. If you're just looking to learn to play all the notes and show off then look elsewhere. But if you love classical music and want to learn true musicality then Emir is a wonderful teacher.

Mr. Emir Gamsizoglu. I highly recommend Emir as a great piano teacher. Music has been an important part of my life since I was a little child. I have taken piano lessons throughout different time periods of my life with periods of interruption due to a heavy work schedule. I have had many piano teachers with varying degrees of skills. I met Emir GAMSIZOGLU in 2010 at a benefit concert when he was performing at The Universalist Church on Central Park West on Manhattan’s Upper West Side in New York City. The concert was a fundraiser for global and local organizations fighting violence against women and girls. In this solo recital, Emir mesmerized me, as well as other audience members, with his musicality, and his technical skills. It was an evening to remember. After the concert, I had the chance to speak with him. I was equally impressed and charmed by his warmth and most sincere personality. As a person who has worked in show business for the last 40 years, I have been exposed to many celebrity personalities. A personality such as Emir’s, among artists and virtuosi, is very hard to find. I am a huge fan of Emir GAMSIZOGLU, and follow his many concerts and projects. It was after the above-mentioned show that Emir Gamsizoglu created, with his wife Ege Maltepe (Gamsizoglu), a very intelligent, entertaining, and interesting production named DRAMA in BEETHOVEN. Their show, and the stories they related about many composers, inspired me tremendously. I shared my history of piano playing with them. I have over recent years enrolled in adult piano classes, but was not comfortable with some teachers who were not patient and very demanding. I became somewhat discouraged and suspended piano lessons for a while. At the recital, I learned that Emir was not only an expert performer, but also a piano teacher and expert musicologist. Finding his personal style very comforting and very patient, I began to take piano lessons with Emir. Emir was very supportive and encouraging of my return to piano playing and education. I felt very privileged when he offered to give me piano lessons. I love taking classes from such a high caliber piano virtuoso. Emir’s reassuring and down to earth personality convinced me to go back to playing the instrument I had once fallen in love with as a child. Now I am starting my second year of piano lessons with Emir as my teacher, I must admit I feel confident about my piano playing as never before. My knowledge and love for classical music increased tremendously. I feel much more confident to perform in front of an audience, because Emir, as a teacher and musician, has improved not only my confidence but my appreciation for music and my ability to play in front of audiences. Emir’s philosophy is that Classical Music is meant to be shared and enjoyed with others and should be easily accessible to all. Emir creates an inviting musical community as a musician on stage that attracts others to participate. He is a person of integrity, compassion, and decency. His unique story as a virtuoso who started to play the piano at a very late age of 20 makes him a unique educator. I find myself incredibly lucky to have met him . I am confident that anyone who takes piano lessons with Emir Gamsizoglu will benefit musically and will enjoy his teachings and their overall cultural experience. I highly recommend Emir with great enthusiasm. Joanie K. on February 9, 2016

My experience with Emir was phenomenal. Having almost no training in classical music not only did he make me sound like an experienced player but increased my knowledge, passion and love for classical music. I EXTREMELY recommend him as a piano teacher!!

The last time I played piano I was around 7 years old. I didn't remember the basics - like staff lines or reading notes. 3 months later Emir had me playing Chopin and Bach. He's not only a great teacher but a wonderful person. My life has been enriched twice - by learning to play classical music and by having Emir as my teacher.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Look for a teacher who performs and who is interested in creating music. Someone who can make you experience the feeling of creating music, not just playing notes. You can learn how to play the notes on your own. So a good instructor should be able to teach you a lot more than that. Also find someone that you will like spending time with. Music education should never become a "homework" that you want to avoid. Learning piano has to be fun. Look for a musician not just a teacher.
