Introduction

I'm doing online lessons exclusively. My education and 20 years of performing experience , enable me to communicate the process of learning the drums, in a clear, logical progression, no matter what your skill level may be. I'm really patient and want to see you reach your goals no matter what they are. I love watching my students progress. Some have gone on to gigs with major label rock bands, others are pursuing under graduate and graduate degrees in jazz and some just want to have fun jamming with their friends. Everyone is different so I tailor my concepts to you. You'll be having fun learning what you need to know and what you want to know. Mike is a dependable, experienced professional who is always on time for lessons and always available for questions. His knowledge is superior and he is an amazing guy, let alone an amazing drummer. I'm 40 years old and really don't have a lot of time for hobbies. Deciding to take drum lessons for the first time, it was important to me to find someone who would be patient and understand that I can't practice 6+ hours a day. Sometimes I have a hard time doing that in an entire week. But Mike is always very encouraging, and works with me to push progress. I was skeptical about live online lessons, and we've had a few technical glitches from time to time. But the process is quite smooth and Mike's setup is really good so you get to see and hear him play easily. Great experience.

10/10 recommend, especially is you’re a newer drummer! Mike is a great teacher—my confidence level was much lower when I first started taking lessons, but he’s very patient and personable which helped a lot with building up my confidence as a drummer. We focused a lot on slowing down and working on rudiments, and ever since, my time-keeping has noticeably improved. He is very flexible and will work with you on your own goals as a drummer.

I came back to drumming after a 15-year hiatus. As an intermediate level drummer with experience playing throughout high school and college, I was looking for a qualified musician who could provide advice not only on my ability to play the notes, but develop a rock-solid pocket across various music styles. In my first lesson with Mike, he did a holistic diagnosis of my playing style, skill level and technique. He was able to quickly identify key limiting factors in my technique and provide actionable exercises that have allowed me to make some quick adjustments and unlock new capabilities. Having started drumming at a very young age, Mike has extensive knowledge and experience. His teaching style is patient and thoughtful. I highly recommend Mike as a teacher. I really wish that I had a teacher like Mike when I started drumming 30 years ago.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
There are no extra fees. The price listed is what you pay. Depending on the circumstances, I may be able work out a package deal. Check with me if interested.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Until things open up, I'm teaching online exclusively. If you’re a beginner we learn a few basic technical things but the first lesson is mainly getting comfortable playing some simple beats along with songs and having some fun playing. We would get more involved with the rudiments, technique, reading etc. in the lessons after that. With more experienced players I look for strengths and weaknesses in the first lesson and come up with a loose game plan that we tweak along the way. Taking into account things you’re interested in working on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
In addition to my B.M. from the Juilliard School in performance (drums) and my 20 years of teaching and gigging at a high level, I spend time on line checking out the latest stuff in the drum community. Staying in touch with other gigging drummers and teachers. I'm a member of the Vic Firth education team where we're constantly sharing information, new ideas etc.
