I’m a drummer/multi-instrumentalist whose primary passion is sharing my love of music with those who want to learn. I received my B.A. in Music from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI and have over 5 years of individual and group teaching experience (drums, music theory) and 8 years of international performing experience. I love students who love learning. My favorite parts of teaching are building relationships through a shared love of music and teaching students to discover music on their own terms. In addition to music fundamentals, I emphasize mind and body awareness as it relates to performance and learning. This can take the shape of simple breath and posture awareness or incorporating meditation and stretching into a student’s practice. Although each student’s needs and goals are unique, I believe it’s important to have an understanding of the totality of music. This means not only focusing on drumming, but also on listening, ear training, notation and transcription, and case study analysis of drummers and artists.

I had Stephen as a band director a few years back and was really impressed at his knowledge of all our different instruments and the ability to explain theory and teach us all our different parts in a song. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
On top of my hourly rate I charge an extra $10-20 for travel, depending on where the student is located.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
After establishing protocol on how and when lessons will take place, my first task is meeting the student where they are. This means finding out why they want to learn drums/music, what their goals are, what they’re passionate about, etc. From there I would tailor a curriculum for their needs and interests, focusing on fundamentals and their creative applications toward developing a musical language.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received my Bachelor of Music from Wayne State University (Detroit, MI). During and after that time I was freelancing as a drummer and sometimes bassist, performing hundreds of shows of all kinds across the globe. In August, 2017 I attended the School for Improvisational Music in Brooklyn, NY.
