Introduction

If you are looking for a tutor who can unlock the 'knot' of music theory, piano technique, and expressive playing, you have found the right person. I am uniquely qualified to help music students of all ages who come to their study with enthusiasm and curiosity. My aim is to help you discover how the right piano technique, combined with a deep understanding of the 'language' of music, can make you into an outstanding musician. I work well with piano students, music students in need of a theory tutor, and composers who need support in mastering harmony and counterpoint. I received my Bachelor's and Master's of Music degrees from Juilliard and my Doctorate of Musical Arts from the Eastman School of Music. I am currently Director of the Conservatory of Music at Purchase College (SUNY). I am located in the northern Bronx (Bedford Park neighborhood).

Jenny is a wonderful piano teacher! Her passion for music is evident. She explains the theory behind a piece of music as well as the techniques and style around playing it which allows for a greater connection with the music and a richer experience while playing. She is very observant and provides helpful tips for fingering, technique, and practicing. I have only had three lessons with her and am already learning a great deal (we meet virtually and I don’t feel as though anything is lacking). She follows up lessons by sending helpful videos and practice pieces. With Jenny I am learning more about the instrument itself, working towards playing by ear, deepening my knowledge about classical music, and of course learning and strengthening fundamental playing/reading skills and technique. She is very knowledgeable but also super personable which makes for a fantastic teacher, highly recommend!

I have only had one lesson so far but the experience was so rewarding. I have wanted to learn to play the keyboard and I am so glad that I found Ms Undercofler. She is extremely personable and very patient. She encourages you to do your best. I will continue to take lessons from her and I highly rate her for anyone looking for a piano teacher

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We will spend a few minutes talking about your previous musical background (if any); any goals you might have, short-term, or long-term, specific pieces you want to work on, etc. Generally we follow the format in the first lesson that we will loosely follow in subsequent sessions: some technique work (finger exercises, scales, posture, etc), some work on pieces/music, some work on theory vocabulary (we may cover this in the pieces and exercises as well), and some basic improvisation work using the materials we've covered. I try and follow each lesson by emailing you my notes and any relevant materials.
