Introduction
Located in ***RALEIGH, NC*** for in person lessons. Teaching nationwide online. Hi there, thank you for visiting my page! I've been teaching music for over 10 years. Teaching and playing music are my passions and what I know I am meant to do in life. In an effort to better serve those who are interested in learning vocals, the guitar, bass, and ukulele I have brought a few other passionate teachers. We look forward to helping you reach your musical goals! What sets us apart as teachers is our approach to teaching and our hands on experience with the techniques and concepts we are showing you. Past and current students can attest to our ability to relate information in a relevant, understandable, and practical way. Oftentimes, students are not given an explanation as to why they are learning something, and why it’s important. As our students better understand the “why” of music, they appreciate and understand the applicability of the material, and consequently can bring their own musical abilities to greater heights. As teachers, we understand that there are multiple learning styles, and therefore strive to meet each of our students where they learn best.

Dan is a great teacher - he is patient, explains things well and has an upbeat attitude. His lessons, and guitar lessons in general, strike me as more expensive than they should be. Because lessons are almost always just showing you exercises that you have to drill on your own, I never feel like I’m learning that much / that the lesson couldn’t have just been a recording. The 2 star is mostly because I think Dan / Lowenberg music have unreasonable policies regarding how they charge for lessons and how they handle a students desire to pause/cancel. First, they charge for a month of lessons (4 if you’re doing 1 per week) by default, second you cannot pause if you’re going out of town or need a break, and third if you want to cancel or stop (because you can’t pause) in the middle of a month, you don’t get a refund. I could imagine if I had the time / focus to work with Dan consistently each week for a year or two I would have gotten a lot better. Life got in the way for me (as I suspect it does for many) and I was disappointed when the nice guy I met with each week had much more aggressive approaches to my wanting to hit pause when life got stressful for me.

Lowenberg Music Lessons's reply
Hi James, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to publicly respond to your concerns. To your first point: Pricing for music lessons is based off of the teachers educational credentials, and years of experience with their craft. Look up the national average price for lessons and you will find my hourly rate to be right in the middle. I have my Bachelor's degree in music, I have been teaching private lessons for 12 years, and I have been playing and investing in learning my instrument for the past 22 years of my life. Part of the nature of taking lessons is that a teacher will personally sit with you and break down the best ways to practice musical techniques. Once you've been shown how and what to practice (for that particular week), you now have the tools needed to grow in competency with personal time spent. "Drilling on your own" after being taught a lesson is the way any person becomes better at particular discipline. Consider school where you have homework, studying, and projects. These forms of practice are the same across any discipline, or field of study. For you and I, we were not able to get the opportunity to go deeper because you chose not continue to pursue lessons after the first few. There are many free resources online that are wonderful. I would encourage you to seek them out. You reached out for lessons because, like all students, you wanted one on one feedback in person from a real person who has worked for decades learning which practice habits will get you to where you want to be correctly and efficiently. To your second point: We are a small business. In our business, our policies are not arbitrary. They are put in place for very specific reasons that I would have been happy to explain had I been asked. Our policy is provided to all prospective students before any lessons are ever taken. If the terms are not agreeable to the student, then lessons do not need to be taken. If a student moves forward with lessons, they are agreeable to the terms and are fully aware of the conditions in which the lessons are provided. We do this so that there are no surprises at any point for either the student or the teachers. Our exceptions for missed lessons are offered on an emergency basis only, however if you are aware of any travel before the monthly invoice goes out you may request a reschedule for that week so that all scheduling is properly aligned for the month ahead. This is a basic practice that many studios implement, and ours allows for some flexibility on rare occasions. I do know of many that never allow for a make up, or rescheduled lesson for any reason whatsoever. It is important to remember that when you book lessons, you are reserving a weekly appointment with a professional that might otherwise have gone to another student. Your time is always guaranteed because you have paid to reserve it. As I mentioned earlier we are a small business, and unfortunately do not have the luxury of holding time slots indefinitely if "life gets in the way" for some students. Meeting for lessons regularly is widely regarded as a key to growing on your instrument, both for accountability purposes and increasing your abilities. If your schedule became too busy to commit to meeting one time a week for 30 minutes then I might suggest that it just may not be the most opportune time for one to learn an instrument (no easy task). Please remember that those "aggressive approaches" are the ones that you were agreeable to when you decided to take lessons! You may always pause lessons, but your day and time cannot be held in the interim. Please keep in mind that while I do love teaching music, it is in fact my livelihood. Thank you, Dan

I highly recommend Dan for guitar lessons! He is professional, organized, personable, and attentive, and clearly dedicates a lot of time and thought to his lesson planning. His assignments engage multiple learning styles which helps with my understanding and absorption, and the progression of the materials feels natural while remaining challenging. I have attempted to learn the guitar several times over the years, but have never stayed consistent. I decided that it was finally time to start guitar lessons, but finding the right teacher was important to me — I knew that it’d be too easy for me to quit if I didn’t see myself improving. I’ve now had four lessons with Dan and have already advanced in areas that have historically been hindrances for me (fretboard note identification, chord transition, timing). Dan provides links to recordings of each lesson, which not only helps with recall, but also lets me see and hear how I’m playing (for both purposes of self-correction and self-congratulation!). I’m truly enjoying my lessons with Dan and look forward to continuing!

I have been taking acoustic guitar lessons from Dan since February. There is so much to say about this guy that I would need more space to write. He is 100% patient with teaching the guitar no matter if it's about theory or teaching a riff . Im 36 and even though I used to play th3 trumpet , its my First time learning the guitar and I always ask him ... how are you so patient? He really cares for his students and it shows. I absolutely look forward to having lesson with him each week . When our hour is done, I always feel as if our lesson just started. The zoom meetings are always clear and he is precise with whatever he is teaching. There is never any lagging on our calls which helps with learning the lesson for that day. Dan records every week and sends them via email so you are able to watch and practice again . I 1000% recommend Dan!

I had my lesson with Dan and it was awesome. I chose to work with Dan because he is very passionate. He genuinely wants to help and teach people. His communication with me was consistent and very clear. I have wanted to take guitar lessons for a long time now and when I found Dan’s video, I knew he would be a great fit for me! I was sad to hear he was not local to me, however, after my first zoom lesson, I was completely satisfied. He was able to communicate to me everything I needed to know like he was in the room. Im very glad I found him and can’t wait to keep learning from him!
