Introduction
ON HOLD-- CURRENTLY, WE ARE NOT PURSUING THUMBTACK LEADS. THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST. Most people think trainers are people who will help their dogs learn obedience. I think that the foundation of training is building a relationship (or bond) built on trust. I want to help people understand that clear communication reduces conflicts and stress and that meaningful changes can be fun rather than based on correction. I love the challenge of meeting people with complex lives who are fighting very hard to work with the dogs that share their home and validating their experience, hearing them. I like gaining their trust and watching the transformation that begins when we work together with the dog(s) rather than against them.

My husband and I found Cheryl on Thumbtack to help with our Springer Spaniel who has severe separation anxiety. She came to our home and was able to give great insight on issues, as well as, provided us with training techniques and tips/tricks to help us work with him. She also followed up with a great detailed summary. We had a great experience with Cheryl and highly recommend her for other families that are struggling with an anxious pup.

This was truly a great BONDING class. Cheryl's class had a different approach with new interactive ideas that were fun for both myself and pup. Cheryl did a great job of explaining her approach and why we needed to learn them. When I wasn't sure about something, she could always explain and fix what was needed. Cheryl is great with people and gifted with dogs. All of this and a reasonable price. If you want a long and loving relationship with your dog, this class is a must! John

FAQs

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have worked in dog rescue since 2000, and I have had well over 200 foster dogs in that time. Since 2009, all of the dogs I've fostered have had serious behavioral issues, often resulting from fearfulness and anxiety. I've worked as an assistant trainer for a local trainer and developed my own curriculum in 2012. In 2015, I completed the rigorous Karen Pryor Professional Dog Training Program (KPA-CTP). In addition, I regularly participate in ongoing professional development with industry leaders, such as Drs. Sophia Yin and Dr. Karen Overall.

  • What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?

With no single licensing body overseeing them, trainers have vastly different approaches and knowledge about current, humane training methods. Visit and talk to trainers before committing to make sure you work well together. And if a trainer's approach conflicts with your beliefs. Stop. You can and should advocate for your dog if something makes you uncomfortable.Ask yourself how you feel about working with this trainer, how does your dog react to the trainer. Make sure you hire the right trainer for you, your family, and your dog, and don't feel the need to commit until you do find the right trainer.
