Introduction

Helvig Productions is a full-service recording and music production studio located in the Excelsior neighborhood, near Lake Minnetonka, 25 minutes west of Minneapolis. It's located on a very private and wooded lot, giving artists the sense of being "out of town" but only 25 minutes from downtown. While we offer all services associated with a traditional studio, we specialize in vocal production and mixing. We really pride ourselves on being that extra bandmate - someone that can support the project as an engineer, producer, or songwriter - whatever is needed. We thrive on collaborations and really want the artist's intentions and voice to be heard. All genres are welcome, as well as all stages of projects. Sometime we are there from start to finish, other times we just help with one part of the journey. Whatever the case, we're here for you!

Helvig Productions was exactly what I was looking for in a recording studio. When I reached out they responded very quickly and invited me to come tour the studio. That’s where I met Max and he showed me around and I quickly booked my first session. Before arriving Max reminded me that we had a session coming up and also asked what I would need to make the session as comfortable and successful as possible. He made sure everything was just right. I was very impressed with their quality of service and their attention to detail. That is why Helvig Productions is my go to studio to record at whenever I’m in town.

Working with Stephen was a very enjoyable process! As someone who is a beginner to a studio setting and was feeling nervous, he did a great job reducing any anxiety and guiding me through the process. Stephen is very detailed/ thorough in production, mixing, and recording vocals. He is also someone who provides useful feedback and suggestions during the process. Stephen is open minded to your ideas and is patient with executing those ideas. Both Stephen and Max are very kind, enjoyable people to work with. In addition to their great character, I felt my money was well spent due to the dedication and effort put forth with me in every session. A great place to create music you truly feel excited/ proud of!

Working with Stephen has been a great honor. He’s incredibly experienced, talented, and dedicated to creating the best final product. Stephen’s calm, relaxed, and receptive demeanor made this very new experience for me that much more comfortable and riveting. I’m a songwriter with experience in lyricism and creating melody but I’ve no training in music theory nor in playing instruments, and Stephen was able to bring my songs to life from the ground-up. He walked me through the areas I had little experience in and did so with patience, enthusiasm, and no judgment. Stephen has an intuitive connection to music. He simply “knows” what sounds right within a specific soundscape and he knows exactly how to bring the vision of any song to life. He allows the artist as much or as little creative control as they desire and doesn’t just take over. He respects the integrity of the artist’s creation and simply facilitates. The studio space is very expansive, it’s the perfect temperature. Also, water and other necessities are provided, making the overall experience comfortable and accommodating. I will continue working with Stephen as long as he’s willing to put up with me, ha! I look forward to learning more from him as an artist, as well. Highly recommended!

Every project is different. The amount of time needed depends on the type of song, instrumentation, arrangement and production.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
We want to make sure that we are the right studio for you. In order to do that we'll start off by scheduling a phone call or studio tour to talk about your project, budget, and goals. If we seem like the correct fit, we'll develop a game plan and move forward from there.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Stephen Helvig - Bachelor of Arts in Vocal Performance (Hamline University). - 13+ years professionally producing, recording, mixing, and mastering music. - Specializes in vocal production and mixing.
