Introduction
With 20 years of experience, I know how to set my students up for success. My lesson are online only. If you live in Michigan, I offer in person lessons at my home studio in Lake Orion, Michigan. Hello! I have a warm personality, and I'm great at working with students of all types, ages 4 to 60+. My students have fun and learn quickly, because I meet them where they are. They can expect to play music they enjoy while developing great technique and reading skills. I teach how to learn music by example, how to read sheet music, play solos, improvise, and how to play with a band. Whether it’s your first lesson or you’re preparing for an audition, I’m ready to help you achieve your goals. Former students have studied at University of Michigan, University of Southern California, Eastern Michigan University, Oakland University, Central Michigan University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp. One of my former students, Jeffrey Grant, is a Grammy award winning percussionist with the LA Philharmonic and President's Own Marine Band. First lesson is free! I offer flexible scheduling and payment options, please ask about my discounts. I offer thirty minute and sixty minute lessons. Here’s the process we’ll go through every weekly lesson. 1. Warm-up. Review how to use the right technique, posture, and hand position. Piano students will review the scales, chords, and arpeggios in the key of the song they're working on. Drummers will play eight on a hand, 3-2 clave, and other basic patterns along with great music at just the right speed. (slowly) 2. Review music from the previous lesson. 3. Learn new music, or keep working on the same. 4. Performance. Before your lesson is over, you’ll be playing today’s music with confidence on your own! 5. Take notes. 5. Practice every day. 6. Repeat!

Nick is a phenomenal teacher, as an adult, he got me back into playing piano and helped me get started to learn piano and helped me build strong foundation. Also a great friend to practice the whole jam sessions with. I highly recommend Nick’s Piano lessons since they are also affordable pricing.

My daughters (ages 12 and 10) have been taking piano lessons with Nick at Matthews Piano & Drum for a little over 2 years. My kids have enjoyed taking the lessons and learning new songs. Nick makes sure that the kids are engaged, having fun, and at the same time learning the fundamentals of music, and the instrument, such as scales and reading sheet music. Nick can tailor the lessons based on each child's interests and learning pace. Even though the classes are virtual, the kids take their sessions seriously and practice regularly. Overall, we are very happy with the experience and will continue with the program.

Details: 10 - 13 years old • Yes, the student can read music • 2 - 4 yrs of formal training • Pop • Yes, the student has a piano • 30 minutes • Remotely (phone or internet) • My home, venue, etc.

My daughters have taken online piano lessons with Nick for almost two years. We really like his teaching style! He has always been a supportive and encouraging teacher. He values his time with each of the girls and always provides positive feedback on their lessons. We've been able to set our schedule and Nick is always flexible when we've had conflicts during our regular scheduled lessons. Our experience with Nick has been nothing but great!

Details: 6 - 9 years old • Yes, the student can read music • No formal training • What the teacher recommends • No, the student does not have either • 30 minutes • My home, venue, etc. • At the pro’s location • Remotely (phone or internet)

My boys 6yo and 4yo have been taking a combination of online and in person lessons with Mr. Nick since Feb 2022 and amazing is an understatement. He is punctual, prompt in communication and flexible adapting his teaching to the needs of our children. Nick works with us when we need to make schedule changes without hesitation and over communicates to ensure no misunderstandings. I have 2 kids at very different levels. Nick shows patience and edits his lessons to make sure my 4yo is learning but not overwhelmed. He’s able to adequately gauge when my 4yo is done and don’t overwhelm him. At the same time, he goes above and beyond with my 6yo who excels in learning the piano. He challenges him, adjust his teaching schedule to keep my 6yo engaged, learning and interested. He pushes him to the perfect point without overdoing it. My kids get so excited for lessons. My 4yo says he loves Nick because he’s funny and my 6yo says because he teaches him cool songs to play. Highly highly recommend.

Details: Younger than 6 years old • No, the student cannot read music • No formal training; some self-taught experience • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has a keyboard • 30 minutes • My home, venue, etc.
