I recommend you hire Mr. Morrison only for the simplest of painting jobs. The good parts: extremely fast response, enthusiastic, tried get the job done very quickly, inexpensive. Tried very hard to get the job done in as little time as possible. I was willing to consider Mr. Morrison an apprentice, but In summary: unprepared, possibly untrained or unpracticed, too rushed, eventually I concluded he would be unable to complete the paint job correctly. The job: fix a hole in the ceiling where a piece had been cut out to investigate the source of water damage. Fix any other ceiling areas that showed water bubbles & or discoloration. Paint the walls, trim and doors in as close a color as their original. Those colors are three different shades of a slightly bluish green, with each wall being only one of those three colors. Since most of the wall areas in this 12x18 foot kitchen are covered by cabinetry and tiles, the total area to be painted is only about one third of the surface. Mr. Morrison quoted $700 for the job an another $100 for paint I specified that I would have to leave every day around 5:00 pm. I did not specify that I expected the job to be done in only one or even three days. I don't understand why he even quoted on the job if he wasn't willing to do minor wall repairs. I accepted the quote and though he did say he didn't do repairs, I did expect him to be able to spackle minor holes and do any basic surface preparation. By the end of day three I paid Mr. Morrison the full $800 because I did not want him to come back again. I consider him unprepared because he only had one drop-cloth and the limited expendable tools & supplies he bought at the start of this job. He did not have a full-size paint pan, only a six-inch wide roller and a disposable trim brush. He did not have his own stepladder. If I hadn't let him use mine, I don't know how he would have reached the ceiling or the top edges of walls. I grant that he tried very hard to fix the cut ceiling area and that by the third attempt he completed a passable job. I still consider him unpracticed and too rushed. I can't see why he thought he might be able to complete the whole job in only one or maybe two days. He would not have done any surface prep of places where one wall had a small paint crack and another a quarter-sized surface rip if I hadn't specifically pointed those areas out on the second day of his labors. Since all the switch covers, outlet covers and vent covers had their original finish, he tried painting around them, leaving streaks, instead of removing them and putting them in a safe place. I ended up removing all those covers so he could evenly paint the walls. On day one, a Saturday, I expected him to arrive between 1:00 and 1:30 pm. He arrived around 3:00 pm and then went to go get paint and supplies. Work stated around 5:00 pm and went 'til almost 10 pm. He bought one gallon of the darkest shade and tried mixing it down with white to accomplish the other shades instead of calling me from the store and telling me that the paint allowance baked into his quote was insufficient. The two gallons of eggshell paint and one quart of primer he bought cost about $180. I had to look those prices up while writing this review. He did not show me the detail of the receipts nor ask me to pay the difference. I consider any other supplies he bought to be overhead costs of doing the job. At the end of the day I stated that I would expect him to start the next day about 9:00 am at the latest, as there was still a lot to do. He showed up closer to 10:00 am. Since he ran out of one color he had manually mixed on day two before finishing its section and then had started to paint the next color shade, he had to attempt to recreate the mix in order to finish the wall where he had to go back. He was unsuccessful in reproducing his original colors. For day three, I asked Mr. Morrison to start out by making sure none of the cabinetry nor counters had paint splatter left on them before he started painting all over again. I provided several new drop cloths, masking supplies, a box of shop rags and cans of pre-mixed paint. When I saw what kind of trim paintbrush he was about to use, I provided a set of three brand-new premium brushes. Those brushes would have ended up in the trash if I hadn't asked that he place them in a pan of water before he left. The weather was horrible that Tuesday, yet he insisted on coming for day three, arriving after 10:30 am. By 5:00 pm there were still paint spots on all the cabinetry and counters, some fresh. others now three days old. The tile floor had more swirls and splats on it than at the end of day two. That morning, I did say that he should not worry about cleaning the floor, as tile can be scrubbed, but I did expect all woodwork and appliances to be paint free. I mentioned the cabinets had just been refinished the prior year. It seems to me that again Mr. Morrison though he had to be done with the job by the end of the day, when all I said was that we had to leave around 5:00 pm. So, inevitably, the results look rushed. The ceiling paint is streaked, uneven and has blotches of wall color in some areas. Every wall area that is supposed to be of only one shade shows at least two colors, either because he didn't clean the roller or brushes between shades of paint or because he missed spots completely. Doors and trim are only partially painted. There are areas where the paint roller or brush was used with obviously insufficient paint on them and areas where he over-loaded the trim brushes with paint as evidenced by the large drips and streaks on and by the baseboards. I expected an even ceiling color and at least the smallest, darkest section of wall and window trim to be fully finished. It took me six hours of careful scrubbing with soft material, latex paint remover and Murphy's oil soap to remove all the paint spots from cabinetry, appliances and countertops. I was amazed to find primer and ceiling paint splatter even on the kickboards under the cabinet edges and behind cabinet drawer and door edges, not just on the obviously visible surfaces. Though I had set myself up for this, it then took me eight hours of scraping, scrubbing and stripping the tile floor before I could apply fresh tile and grout sealant. Included in that time is the stripping and sanding of the baseboards to remove the unsightly drips from what had been perfectly smooth surfaces. I had to throw out and replace three kitchen floormats. Two other floormats are washable and I was able to get all the paint out of them. Proper preparation and masking when he started the job would have avoided the need for all the extra work. Now, I still have to figure out when I can possibly take the time off from work to repaint the ceiling correctly, then touch up all the wall and trim errors. Photos show the agreement we reached before day three, and how wall and ceiling paint details look after I was done cleaning all the cabinets, appliances and floor.

Details: Home • 1 room • Walls • Trim • Ceiling • Doors • Window frames • 8 - 10 feet (standard ceiling) • Repainting, with same color • Fair - minor holes and scratches • No, this is not new construction • No, I will move things out of the way myself
