Introduction
I’ve been teaching privately for 30 years and I’ve owned and operated Orion Music Studio in Lake Orion for 23 years. I specialize in American finger style guitar and traditional banjo styles. I write songs, compose for solo guitar and perform in both solo and ensemble settings. I’ve recorded several albums and I’ve toured nationally as well as overseas. In 2002 I completed a graduate degree in music that focused on the late guitarist John Fahey and his legacy in regards to 20th century musical identity. My focus is on general guitar and banjo leading towards finger style and fingerpicking techniques. I want my students to be self sufficient and able to play completely on their own. Application is key and I encourage note reading and arranging as opposed to just tabs and other people’s arrangements. But all materials are taught and students learn a comprehensive approach to their instrument and related theory. A 50/50 balance between student and teacher directing is emphasized. Nothing is left out in the cold. Please only contact me if you can take in person lessons in Detroit or Lake Orion, MI or virtually.

Nick has taken me from a novice level guitar player to an advanced level guitar player and the journey has been wonderful. He has a prewritten curriculum for fingerstyle but is open to helping you learn anything. He has helped me write several songs and guided me through the process. Through him I have learned, fingerstyle, strumming patterns, song structure, advanced chords and chord progressions. His mastery of music and teaching music really shows in our lessons. I would recommend Nick to any person looking to progress their guitar skills whether advanced or beginner.

I've been taking lessons from Nick for 10 years. I started with the banjo and have since moved on to finger style guitar, with concentration on folk and jazz. I believe to learn an instrument you need professional lessons and the discipline of weekly sessions to critique your music. Nick has taught me music theory, how to move up the neck. and arrange tunes. With his education, experience, and teaching method you will learn how to play the guitar, banjo, mandolin, or ukulele. I highly recommend him as a teacher.

We feel so lucky to have found Nick as a guitar teacher nearly 9 years ago. My son has learned so much from him and come so far. Nick is an amazingly talented musician and a great teacher. You won’t find better out there!

I'm actually a former colleague of Nick's, teaching with him for over 10 years as well as going to College with him and "cutting our teeth" as musicians. I learned many things from Nick as he's shown me some of the most important fundamentals in teaching people music...one of which is to get to know the person with whom you are teaching. Nick is an excellent communicator, mentor and especially musician. If you want to learn the proper way while having fun, I highly recommend Nick Schillace.
