I have won 2 National Endowment for the Humanities summer fellowships for teachers. I am a published playwright. I have more than 100 (5-Star) student narrative reviews on this site. Carl is very patient and has extensive experience in teaching reading and writing. He knows how to make learning enjoyable for children, which, in turn, helps them improve their reading and writing skills more quickly. My daughter is currently in 5th grade and has been receiving one-on-one tutoring from him for over a year, during which her reading and writing abilities have improved significantly. Later, we also added public speaking classes with Carl, which have proven to be very effective. My daughter used to be quite shy in school and hesitant to express herself publicly, but last year, she represented her school in a speech competition and achieved a great ranking.

I had a phone consultation with Carl and was very impressed with his way of teaching, lesson structure and his extensive experience with tutoring children with different backgrounds and needs. He guided the children to read, learn and think in depth. In a world of lots of distractions and short attention spans, training and horning this capability is super important and can be a differentiator for the kids. He also shared with me some parenting tips. I think he can bring new perspective for the parents and train the children in a systematic way, not only in their reading/writing, but also thinking.

Carl has been tutoring my two sons (one in 5th grade and another in 10th grade) on reading and writing for more than half a year. He is well-organized and always plans ahead. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
[My services are VIRTUAL ONLY.] I am open to reducing my hourly fee if the total amount of weekly tutoring time is 90 minutes or more.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
[My services are VIRTUAL ONLY.] I begin with a telephone conversation during which the client and I discuss his/her specific needs and goals and the ways in which I can help realize them. We then schedule a first lesson during which we get to know one another and feel comfortable working together. The lesson can take place at the client's home, office or a nearby cafe/coffeeshop.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wesleyan University (Middletown, CT) in history and European literature. My coursework in college required of me to devote extensive time to reading and writing, and this process strengthened my ability to articulate my ideas in writing and speaking in a precise, sophisticated and succinct fashion. I have a Master's degree in Education from Lesley University (Cambridge, MA). My coursework there along with my classroom practicum/internship experience instilled in me tremendous insight into the quailities and work habits that make one an effective teacher. In my 35-year teaching career, I have worked as a Grade 4 classroom teacher, a history teacher to Grades 6-9 (American, European, Asian, and ancient history), a library studies teacher, a children's drama teacher and theater director, and a school communications writer and editor.
