Sabato is one of the best teachers I've ever had. I've had the opportunity to study with him for a little over four years, and I'm confident my accolades reflect his teaching. In January of 2024, he and I worked on Moment's Notice for an MMEA audition. What separated Sabato from other teachers, and helped me win my audition, was his ability to teach comping like a bassist and soloing like a pianist. Sabato has a unique background on the trumpet that really sets his playing apart from other bassists. He and I worked out of Hal Crook's "How to Improvise" on concepts such as upper structure triads, sounds that I thought were reserved for other members of the rhythm section that he showed me were not. Through his distinctive style of teaching, I learned how to think more melodically in my solos, and work in sounds outside the changes that augmented my playing inside the changes. I really enjoyed working with Sabato and found that our one hour lessons flew by. I highly recommend him to anyone at any level looking to learn something new on the bass.
