FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The industry standard rate for a piano tuning now on average is $200. Depending on the city you live in, some tunings can be $275. My standard rate is $185, and I usually will include an easy fix for a pedal adjustment or a sticking key, and will quote prices for more involved repairs as I go. Generally I charge the full $185 for new customers and people that tune once a year, and I give a $25 discount for tuning the recommended twice a year. Especially since Thumbtack charges businesses for leads, part of the $185 covers the cost of a lead, as well as paying my technicians, software and accounting fees, etc.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I usually try to gauge roughly how old the piano is and how long it has gone without a service. Then, after assessing the piano I explain to the customer any issues that might arise from wear and tear and/or the age and length of time it’s gone without being maintained. If it’s in great condition, I’ll also let the customer know.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was a full-time piano technician for 2+ years, working for a full-operation shop doing rebuilding, regulating, tuning, repairs, etc.
