I'm a working musician so I teach from a real-world perspective (versus a purely academic approach).
If you're not enjoying your lessons, I change things--we'll work on a different type or style of music or put away our work on a particular technique and come back to it later. If you're struggling too hard, you're not learning.
Discovering that everyone has musical ability--I've taught kids that were struggling as beginners to adults who take up an instrument to maintain their brain health in later life, and helped both grow to a unexpectedly high-level of musical ability.

I had always wanted to learn to play the saxophone. But, had a very hard time finding a teacher. Somehow, I found John Childers
I took lessons from this wonderful, fun, generous, and above all PATIENT man. I felt truly and absolutely that he played (pun intended) a huge part in turning my life around.
You see, I've had medical issues that included 5 strokes. With nothing short of a LONG & miraculous physical recovery, John not only helped my body get stronger, more importantly, he helped heal the emotional damage done by years of strokes & therapy. He helped me feel human again. He helped me find the pure joy that only comes from music.
I will surely love and be indebted to this man for the rest of my life.
I was VERY sad to be forced to take a break from his classes. But, I WILL get back there if he can stand trying to re-teach sax to a woman with a weak left arm again!! I know he can and would because of that patience I mentioned.
I am working to be as patient with myself as he was with me!
He is a wonderful musician, himself. Everyone should at least get the opportunity to hear him play! And then, for him to be able to bring his vast talent WAY down to my level takes a special kind of person. I know I would not have that patience, that gift....
He does!!!

I've been taking sax lessons from John for
over a year now. He's great and has the
patience of a saint. I took up music a little
later in life than most and he has helped me
figure out theory as well as play music that
brings me great enjoyment. I would recommend him
for lessons to anyone interested in sax or clarinet.

My daughter decided she wanted to play saxophone at the age of 15. She began learning from John around the start of the spring semester of her freshman year. By that fall, she was good enough to make the high school marching band! We've continued taking lessons from John, and she has continued to progress throughout the year. She is now capable of playing alongside other saxophonists who have been playing since Junior High. John's a professional, and his love of saxophone rubs off on my daughter. I still can't believe she's gotten to the level she's at after such a short time.
