Hired WS to perform 3 main goals. 1) Clean soffit areas to move existing blown insulation and add baffles to make sure the attic maintains proper ventilation; 2) Seal any penetrations (e.g, pipes, can lights) and add bat insulation correctly over the blown insulation to add R-value to the home; 3) Add foam board insulation correctly in 2 places to add R-value but to continue to use a portion of the area as storage and against knee wall to also reduce sound penetration to bedrooms. I was VERY clear about what I wanted and why. I made a point of things that bothered me to be sure it got done correctly. I didn't want more blown insulation since it moves too easily in soffits, is hard to move out of the way for any repairs, etc. I ASKED if they could use bats instead over the blown insulation. I watched various YT videos by insulation companies (Not Joe handy men) using the method. I also saw a great "This Old House video" on the same subject and a VERY similar attic to mine. Area is flat with existing plywood through 50%, easy access with brand new pull-down ladder, and poses no difficulties. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghH5un9P7zQ&t=58s They will claim that "they told me that Bat insulation was not the best way" which is a lie. WS didn't say nor did their contract state the proposed plan was improper. It is an accepted method, they just did it badly! I've done it myself in a previous home. WS simply did not place the bats tightly against each other and left many 1-2 inch gaps between each run. Defeats the entire project purpose and wastes my $$$$! You don't want to stuff the insulation together too tight, nor do you want to leave big gaps. It's not rocket science. Didn't help that they used rolls of insulation instead of flat bats at pre-cut lengths which are easily available. Didn't think I had to be so specific on what to use with a "professional". (Example in photos...one of many gaps. WS will claim "I moved it". I didn't. The gaps are there. Now I HAVE to move them more together to fill the gaps and buy more insulation to fill the resulting larger gap.....many little gaps add up to 1 big one.) Even if the insulation type wasn't an issue, WS work was sloppy and unprofessional. The type of insulation doesn't explain why they can't cut straight, use tape incorrectly or insufficiently, and left two 8' long sections of 8" wide space unfilled. I had to complain to get them to do it. Leaving this size gap is like leaving your front door open! They didn't tape the foam boards together on the floor...pretty useless. That wasn't the worst though. I made a point not less than 3 times to replace the existing broken drywall scuttle in another attic access and instead use plywood properly insulated as a new scuttle. After saying he did it, I went to check. He lied. He simply added a piece of plywood, added the broken piece of drywall on top of it and attached a thin reflective barrier to the broken drywall piece! "I did that to weight it down" he says. I want it properly insulated....not a weight! This did nothing to prevent air penetration in a common failure point, and didn't actually solve the problem! And why would I want to pay for a reflective barrier to be attached to a BROKEN piece of drywall? The PROPER way is to attach a large thick bat of insulation at a slightly larger size than the opening so that when the scuttle cover is lowered into the frame it prevents air penetration as best as possible. A little weight is helpful for a seal too....but a piece of broken drywall with a reflective cover and a piece of plywood is NOT proper scuttle insulation! Left me really aggravated. I don't trust their work, now I'm forced to crawl around my attic to check every part. I just love spending $4600 only to do work myself to fix their work. Should've done it myself and would've saved a lot of $$$. They'll dispute my report, but the photos don't lie. Go elsewhere for your insulation needs.
