Introduction

Based out of Chicago, IL, I have 10+ years of music teaching experience and even more years performing and composing professionally. While my main instruments are drum set, marimba and guitar, I teach improvisation and composition on any/all instruments you want to learn. I believe that all living beings are born musical. My goal is to help people unlock their innate musical talents, with a focus on fluency and expressiveness. My passion is combining everything I have learned and creating something new in original music and improvisational contexts. I compose for and perform with a number of Chicago-based musicians and bands, including, Family Junket, Jazz Robots, Seres de Luz, and Berta Bigtoe. I have a BA in Music from Macalester College and studied music in Brazil on a Fulbright Scholarship. With ten years of experience teaching people of all ages in music schools and private lessons, I am excited to meet new students and help you reach your musical goals!

Jonah is a wonderful teacher. He is extremely knowledgeable about all things music. He made sure that all the lessons were tailored towards my goals and was flexible in changing if I changed my mind about music goals. Jonah is very considerate and doesn’t put pressure on the students to perform to a certain level. He creates a warm and inviting environment for each individual to explore music. I would highly recommend him to any beginner or experienced musicians looking to improve their skills.

Jonah has a great approach to teaching music. I'm not a musician and I have no musical background which makes it intimidating to play an instrument. Not only is an incredible musician, but he offers a unique approach to teaching that I don't think you'll find in many other teachers. Rather than starting from sheet music, Jonah has you start bottom up by just playing with him! When you play with Jonah in 1-1 or group lessons, you each take turns playing out an initial rhythm that the other people in the room build on top of. Of course, after each short plays session like this, there's an opportunity for reflection and more focused practice if that's what you want! What I like most about playing with Jonah is how I never feel embarrassed or less then for being a novice, because there is no right or wrong! It's honestly a very uplifting experience where you can get whatever support you want from Jonah rather than him telling you what you can and cant do. As a bonus, if you go to his group lessons you can meet a bunch of like minded people that are working on building their relationship with music just like you!

Jonah Lazarus seriously is “The best Music Teacher Ever.” He is a Godsend. He is working with 4 students who are hard of hearing. Jonah is very friendly, patient, and professional. The teens enjoy going to his class. Jonah is very affordable too. After reading his bio, is what made my decision to give him a try and we are sticking with him!!! I am also very happy, that he just so happens to be 3 mins from where we are located. I couldn’t ask for more. If you are looking for a music teacher who has experience in a number of instruments, professional, friendly and just down right the best then look no further, he is the one!!!
