FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I offer a free 60-90 minute evaluation where I meet with the owner and their dog(s). This helps because: (1) It lets the owner ask me any questions they may have and decide whether they want to hire me without having to pay just to see me (2) It allows me to evaluate the dog. I need to make sure I am conscious of the dog's energy level and temperament (reactions to dogs and people, whether they're nervous or confident, etc.) in order to keep him or her safe. (3) It gives me a chance to interact with the owner, find out what their dog likes and doesn't like, maybe hear some stories, and make a connection. Dogs are an extension of their owner, and it's important not to forget that.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have worked with dogs for many years, including client, family, and friend's dogs as well as those at shelters and rescues. The shelter work is always my favorite because it gives me a chance to encounter a lot of extreme behaviors that resulted in people abandoning their pet. Seeing a dog transform from a F-150 pulling machine with no manners to a happy, obedient pup is by far the most rewarding aspect. I have probably worked with hundreds of dogs, and I have never met one I didn't like.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
I think it's important to watch dog trainers in action and assess them for yourself. Do they work with the dog or against it? Do they get frustrated or remain calm? Does the dog respond well and listen to them? Does the dog seem to be getting better or worse? The only way to make sure you're comfortable to allow someone to handle your dog without your supervision is to watch and make sure you're happy with their approach before making any decisions.
