Whether you prefer a sleek, minimalist smart home or a sustainably decorated haven of recycled materials, there’s no shortage of home project inspiration available to help elevate your space.
Staying in the loop with home trends isn't just about keeping up with the Joneses — it's about creating a space that reflects your personality, embraces modern conveniences, and aligns with sustainable values.
The latest 2024 home decor trends serve as more than just aesthetic upgrades. They can be a roadmap to creating a home that better fits you, your family, and your lifestyle.
In 2024, homeowners are expected to show off their personalities through accent pieces, textures, wall decor, colors, and more. Whether your aesthetic is more minimalist or focused on bringing in as much color and light to your home as possible, many home design trends will speak to you in 2024.
"Homeowners are looking to scale up their accent pieces to become bigger focal points in the home," says Morgan Olsen, Thumbtack's Home Design Expert. "We’re seeing oversized colorful accent chairs, oversized island pendant lighting, and much more."
One of the biggest living room and whole home trends from 2023 that’s continuing to grow in 2024 is brutalism, reports Zillow.
The characteristics of brutalism include raw and unfinished design materials (like raw concrete, blackened steel, and wrought iron) and a lack of ornamentation or other expressive elements. This allows homeowners to lean into the brutalism aesthetic or use it as a blank slate to add more personality.
And don’t assume brutalism-inspired interior design is always cold or harsh. According to Vogue, today’s brutalist style is softer and utilizes wood, plants, and other natural elements to create a warmer environment.
"Curves will be embraced even more in 2024," says Morgan. "The organic feeling of curved mirrors, tables, furniture, and architectural details bring a peaceful feeling rather than squared off edges."
"An easy way to amp up the design in a home is to add texture, and this will only get bigger in 2024," says Morgan. "Adding fluted glass panels to the front of cabinets, textured wallpaper, a concrete or stone fireplace, textured curtains. All these things give your home another dimension and purpose."
This year, the PPG Paints color of the year is "Limitless," a beautiful warm, light yellow that has the characteristics of both a neutral and primary color. It fits in with warm and cool color palettes, which is why it’s set to be so popular next year.
Homeowners are also finding ways to infuse their personality into their interior design through murals. According to Zillow, "Murals are showing up 18% more often in for-sale homes."
Also, the 2024 Bath Trend report from the National Kitchen + Bath Association (NKBA) found that wallpaper is the number one way interior designers incorporate statement colors in the bathroom.
From quieter appliances to more flexible refrigerator space, many of the kitchen trends for 2024 are about creating a peaceful, warm, and calm oasis that can serve as both a food prep and entertainment hub.
"We are seeing warmer colors on the home’s exterior and interior but most of all in the kitchen," says Morgan. "Painted white cabinets are being painted over with moody dark colors or warmer beige and almond tones. Wood cabinets are also trending to add more texture to the kitchen."
Everyone knows that every great party eventually migrates to the kitchen. A larger focus will be placed on kitchen islands in 2024, reports the NKBA. These versatile areas can easily function as spaces for food prep, storage, entertaining, and dining.
In service of allowing people to spend more time in their kitchen, quieter appliances are set to be a big trend in 2024.
According to the NKBA's 2024 Kitchen Design Trends report, 65% percent of interior designers say their clients prefer ultra-quiet dishwashers. And more than 40% are moving toward simple pull-out trash cans instead of loud trash compactors.
Because healthy eating often involves lots of fresh food and ingredients that require refrigeration, homeowners are gravitating toward fridges that are flexible, have more space, and are adjustable to suit the needs of each user. The NKBA report found that 78% of designers say homeowners want flexible refrigeration space to accommodate their healthy lifestyles.
Bathrooms have typically been considered a place of tranquility and relaxation, and this year’s trends show that technology will help make these rooms even more restful.
This year, the NKBA's 2024 Bath Trend report found that 21% of designers say that their clients have expressed interest in adding a refrigerator to their bathroom. These mini fridges can be stocked with beverages or used as a safer storage area for skincare products and medication.
In 2024, one of the most significant home design predictions is that showers will become a larger area of innovation than bathtubs. Many homeowners in the NKBA report said they now favor new premium shower features like rain and steam capabilities, built-in seating, and body sprays.
This year, the most popular bathroom renovation was removing a bathtub so the shower could get larger, and this trend will continue into next year. This makes sense, given how sophisticated showers have become. Plus, it offers more room for these premium features many homeowners are enjoying.
There are many ways to turn your outside space into a place of relaxation that doesn’t require as much hands-on labor as a garden. These trends show how people are adding new elements to their gardens to help them spend more time outdoors.
The Zillow report also found that cold plunge pools are a growing wellness trend that’s set to have a significant impact in 2024. These pools can fit in even the most pocket-sized garden and have been praised for their ability to improve circulation and reduce inflammation. If you have a small backyard, a plunge pool may be a great choice for you.
The 2024 Garden Trends Report from Garden Media highlighted the “horti-futurist" movement, where plants and gardens are giving off serious sci-fi vibes. Closed terrariums, survivalist gardens, neon landscape lighting, and alien-looking plants and succulents may be a bigger trend in 2024 and beyond.
A sensory garden is designed to engage all five senses. Instead of opting for plants that simply look attractive, many designers now focus on plants and outdoor décor elements that look, feel, smell, and sound appealing. According to Zillow, "Listings mentioning sensory gardens or pathways are up 314% compared to last year."
Garden Media’s report also predicts dark, moody, gothic gardens will be trending in 2024 — and not just during Halloween. The company found that there were 430k posts on social media, with the hashtags #Gothgarden(ing), #VictorianGardens, and more.
You can achieve a gloomy garden by choosing eerie plants (think: black peony poppies, blood-red sunflowers, and black tulips), keeping some plants that have faded, and uplighting your trees.
We can expect to see an exciting and vibrant home design landscape in 2024. With the kitchen evolving to be more versatile and bathrooms with more opportunities for relaxation, there are so many ways for homeowners to reshape and rethink their homes in the coming year.
