As we say goodbye to another year and look ahead to 2025, we turned to our community of pros to gather expert predictions on next year’s home design trends. After consulting interior designers, general contractors, architects, and home builders from coast to coast, we’re revealing the trends that will soon define home design and décor.
While 2024 was chock full of bright colors, bold accents and eye-catching pieces, 2025 will be the year of anchoring ourselves at home and creating a soothing space. From reconnecting with nature and creating a calming environment to investing in our current pieces rather than buying new, 2025 will be all about rooting in place.
But that doesn’t mean it will be a year without change — homeowners are eager to embrace cutting-edge technology in their homes and when it comes to inspiration, social media and influencers still reign strong. And homeowners are willing to invest in their homes in the year ahead, with almost two-thirds budgeting at least $20,000 for home design improvements in 2025.
Read on to see what home pros predict will happen at home in 2025.
While 2024 was the year of the backyard, with homeowners prioritizing sprucing up their outdoor spaces, 2025 is all about bringing your outdoor oasis inside. In the coming year, homeowners can expect a surge in nature-inspired designs that evoke a sense of calm and a return to our roots, using greenery and neutral color palettes to create a soothing environment.
When asked which decor trends will be most popular next year, the #1 trend pros identified was biophilia and increased connectivity to nature and plants. If you’re a plant newbie, your house lacks natural light or you just don’t want the responsibility of regularly watering plants, try a snake plant or cast iron plant — they’re low maintenance and perfect for beginners.
Natural materials will also take center stage when it comes to remodels, with 80% of pros identifying natural wood, untreated with paint, as one of the top construction materials of 2025, and a majority (60%) anticipating a heightened focus on natural light with larger windows and skylights. Ranjana Mangharam, Thumbtack Pro and owner of Design by Ranj, believes people are craving calm, so minimalist, Japandi styles and Scandinavian styles will be more evident next year.
This carries over to outdoor trends as well. When asked about outdoor design projects that will be popular, a majority of pros (56%) identified creating calming spaces with gardens, small ponds and fountains alongside growing gardens, vegetables and composting (36%).
In the year ahead, we’ll see homeowners prioritize refreshing their spaces, with 57% of pros predicting a focus on remodeling vs. building new. Simple yet impactful updates are leading this trend, with 60% of pros predicting that room redesigns—including painting, updating furniture, and accessorizing with rugs and plants—will be one of the most popular home design projects of 2025. Close behind, 58% of pros anticipate a rise in room remodels as homeowners refresh layouts and repurpose spaces to suit evolving needs, whether that’s working from home or making space for a growing family.
This trend will bleed over into decor as well, with 43% of pros anticipating that vintage touches like antiques and heirlooms will be trending in 2025. Whether it’s adding vintage mirrors, framing old maps or prints or bringing in nostalgic accessories like record players or typewriters, vintage is making a comeback.
Entertaining at home continues to grow in popularity, with a focus on functional yet stylish spaces for hosting friends and family. According to the pros, creating spaces conducive to gathering and making memories will be a priority for homeowners next year, turning their homes into hubs for connection, whether it's a cozy dinner party in the dining room or a summer BBQ in the backyard.
Pros believe that kitchens will be the #1 most prioritized room for redesign in 2025, followed closely by living and family rooms. As for al fresco upgrades, 2 in 3 pros (67%) predict outdoor spaces like decks, outdoor kitchens, and patios will dominate exterior renovation projects, specifically modified for hosting. Upgraded areas aren’t the only backyard feature we can expect in 2025; a third of pros also predict homeowners will add amenities like pools, saunas and pickleball courts.
Artificial Intelligence has impacted all areas of our lives from how we work to how we shop, and home design and decor is no exception. Pros expect that AI’s impact on home design will grow, with 76% of pros saying they believe AI will play a role in shaping home layouts and design in 2025. Whether it’s better understanding your style, creating models of what furniture and decor will look like in your home or designing dream layouts, AI can simplify what is often a complex and time-consuming process.
Smart technology is also becoming a mainstay in home design to enhance convenience, efficiency, and sustainability. Pros predict the top smart home installations homeowners are most likely to add in 2025 are:
Homeowners are finding creative ways for tech to reduce manual tasks, with Thumbtack Pro and interior designer Mangharam noting that “motorized draperies or shades connected to smart home systems have become a popular smart home upgrade with many of my clients.”
While thus far younger homeowners tend to be most interested in tech-infused design, we’ll likely see this become more mainstream in the year ahead.
Design inspiration can come from anywhere, but pop culture references will continue to play a leading role. According to our experts, social media influencers and celebrity homes will have the strongest influence on home design trends, followed by DIY videos on YouTube, Instagram and TikTok for homeowners looking for budget-friendly, creative ideas. When asked about which platforms will influence design trends the most, Instagram led the way (71%), followed closely by Pinterest (67%) and TikTok (44%).
Movies and TV series will also continue to spark design inspiration, which means we’re about to see a lot more pink and green. Whether it’s Bridgerton bringing back romanticism, Barbie continuing to splash pink across bedrooms or Wicked inspiring the rich jewel tones of emerald glam, pop culture will continue to infiltrate our homes.
