Bonjour and Welcome to LE MOT JUSTE, offering individual and group French lessons and translation. I am a tenured college professor of French based in Atlanta, with over 25 years of experience. I have a PhD in French and have studied at Duke and La Sorbonne. I am completely bilingual and spend much time in France. For lessons, I create lessons according to your interests: language, culture, art, literature, history, philosophy, cinema, fashion and more! This professor has honed her teaching ability to the degree that each lesson is engaging, challenging, and rewarding. Her methods encourage the student to both understand and speak the language, empowering the reticent French speaker to try the exercises, knowing that he/she will be corrected in a helpful manner. In short, she embodies the principles of effective instruction, and does so with effortless style! When I am not trying to master French, I am trying to figure out a way to channel her beautiful accent. I highly recommend Le mot juste!

A French lesson with Madame Julia Knowlton is like a beautiful dance. During each dynamic session, she guides your steps and moves as you absorb the rhythm, melody, and structure of the language and build your vocabulary. A rich combination of immersion in conversational French and formal instruction in phonetics, grammar, syntax and semantics, these lessons help build a solid linguistic foundation. Madame Knowlton adapts her pace and pedagogical approach to her students’ learning level and needs. This high-impact practice has helped me advance quickly and has given me the confidence to apply what I learn right away. In just a couple of months, my vocabulary has expanded beyond what I could have imagined when I started out, and I have gained confidence in my pronunciation. Madame Knowlton’s deep knowledge of French culture and society further enriches our sessions and helps me understand the contextually appropriate use of the language. Our meetings are the highlight of my week. My long-term goal is to pirouette with fluency in French!
