- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
After a little questioning to make sure you don’t have any serious contraindications to exercise we will assess your squat, press, and deadlift form. I will be very picky with how we do these movements and we’ll go through a lot of education of the when’s and why’s of the most important exercises. Through the next weeks of training we will progressively push you in the major movements and exercises so that you gain strength working the most muscle possible. My goal is always to educate you so that you can eventually continue on your own, or with some check ins every once in a while.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I completed the Starting Strength Coach certification in 2019, which was the culmination of 3+ years of rigorous self-directed curriculum including brushing on physics, mechanics, biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and psychology as it pertains to coaching clients. I am constantly working to stay up to date on the latest techniques being tested by the best physical therapists and coaches around the world. Some of the platforms I learn from are the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Starting Strength, Barbell-Logic, The Barbell Prescription, Barbell Medicine, and the Clinical Athlete.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
After having devoted myself to crossfit, the ‘bro splits’, supplements, and NASM-certified exercise for years I was skinny, weak, and frail. I was a personal trainer at the time, and what concerned me even more than not seeing results in my body, was that my clients weren’t seeing results either. I was honest with myself and decided that the ‘gold standard’ PT education just wasn’t all that helpful. I found Starting Strength which touted that the program it recommended ‘works for everyone when it is correctly applied.’ I applied it to my own training and gained 80lbs in 6 months. I increased reliable strength metrics by 300%. in 120 days Starting Strength completely changed my life. But when I applied it to my clients, something amazing happened. It started working for them as well, and it seemed to help every client in what their goals were, it made weight loss or weight gain easier with proper diet control, it improved balance, strength, stamina, and power. I fell in love with how adaptable this simple method was, and have devoted myself to getting people stronger, healthier, and more independent ever since.
