Introduction
Brian Hayes has been providing guitar, bass and piano lessons since 1996. His playing experience includes over 25 years in electric, acoustic and nylon string guitar in the styles of rock, metal, classical and flamenco and has been formally trained in the areas of classical guitar and classical piano. Through his years of teaching experience, Brian has perfected step-by-step methods for beginner to advanced guitar and piano, reflecting the variety of styles in his musical background. In addition to instructional books, teaching materials include: progress sheets for keeping detailed records of the student’s progress, chord and scale diagrams, rhythm exercises with various strumming and finger-style patterns, complete scale program starting from beginner, working up to advanced and music theory materials. I take pride in providing people of all ages with the musical skills that will last them a lifetime.

My experience with Mr. Hayes has been really good. I presented a unique task with my instrument that most people I’ve spoken to didn’t slightly understand, but Mr. Hayes was able to decipher the best way to go about this task, and the music is sounding great! He studies my tasks week by week to match the pace I am progressing at - and is very articulate. This especially is key because I’ve never played an instrument. I expect to learn something new each week that I can be excited about. I am thankful for this caliber of instruction!

Details: 18 - 25 years old • No formal training • No, the student cannot read music • What my teacher recommends • Yes, the student has an instrument • 60 minutes • At the pro’s location • My home, venue, etc. • Remotely (phone or internet)

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

Since my adult students may already have an idea of the styles of music that interest them, I begin by formulating a method plan to fit their musical interests and goals. The IReal Pro app is used to provide backing tracks for all written assignments. For my younger beginners, the Hal Leonard Method is my typical approach. The Hal Leonard "Easy Pop Melodies," are then added, which is a great way to apply the note-reading skills learned in the method books. "IReal Pro" is used for all backing tracks.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

I’ve worked with students ranging from the ages of 5 to 90. Although children from the age range of 5 to 10 are typically better off starting on piano, guitar can be fine at that age as well, depending on the student. And you’re never too old to learn how to play an instrument or learn something new. I live by this philosophy, myself!

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always hire an instructor who keeps you accountable to play in time and who keeps a record of your current practice speeds. Whether you’re working on reading notes from a method book, learning scales and improvisation, learning to play your favorite songs or practicing chord progressions, time is everything in music. Starting by playing accurately at a slow speed and gradually working up is the key to mastery.
