I have two degrees in education, including a master’s degree in Reading and Learning Disabilities from the University of Miami. I’ve also been a certified teacher for 20 years and have been teaching reading and writing to elementary students for 10 of those years, and even worked as an elementary school reading coach.
There are many strategies an educator uses to increase reading and writing proficiency. More than anything, exposing students to lots of high-quality books is a must! Students develop fluency by reading books on their reading level and develop knowledge by reading books above their reading level with an adult’s help.
Vocabulary and reading comprehension must be taught explicitly, along with phonics for early readers. Reading and writing instruction are opposite sides of the same coin, so it’s also critical to use great books as inspiration for great writing.
I would love to help you help your child gain the skills and confidence to become a life-long learner.
