- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I have always been what I would consider athletic. Over the years I have played different sports and had success at them. Until recently I never knew what it was truly like to be in shape. I played varsity basketball and varsity golf in high school. Then two weeks after my high school graduation my cousin and I shipped off to basic training at Fort Benning, GA. We learned the fundamentals of working out which primarily consisted of calisthenics. Anyone who has spent time on an active duty army base can tell you that diet is not one of their primary concerns. They sure understand the idea of calorie restriction (lol) however, there is a lot more involved than just that. I then went to college and as most kids do fell out of sports and fell into partying. After graduation I moved to Boston. I lived the corporate life for many years. Food on the go, gym when I had the time if ever. I developed what I like to call the Red Bull Diet I could not start my day with out at least two Red Bulls. I know it sounds aggressive, but that was what I needed just to get moving. In practical terms I wish I had purchased stock because I could have retired by now :). Before I knew it I was almost thirty, substantially overweight and sick with Crohns disease. To add insult to injury, earlier this year the doctors found something new in my system called FAP. This is an extremely debilitating form of intestinal cancer from which my doctors make it seem that I have no escape. Faced with this horrific disease I had to make one of two choices, I could sit around and feel sorry for myself or I could decide that with whatever amount of time I have left I could do something with it. I wanted to change my self from the inside out. I quit my job and moved home with my cousin. He was my best friend growing up, however we slowly drifted apart after I moved to Boston. Ryan was one of the few people who always seemed concerned about my health. He always came to me with suggestions on natural dietary and supplemental strategies to help me deal with my Crohns. Until this point in my life it fell on deaf ears. I used to look at Ryan as fanatical but I never took the time to understand that he was dealing with his own health issues. Now its my turn to try and turn my health around. I decided to trust someone that has been there for me my whole life, so it was at that point that we started this journey together. After three months of living that philosophy my doctors were amazed by the turn around in my Crohns disease and my over all health. The doctors thought that my health had made a turn for the better based on prescriptions they had given me. I then explained to them that I hadnt taken any of them. They questioned my judgement and I then explained I have been taking these medications since I was seventeen with little to no results. I felt it was time for a change. I lost thirty five pounds and feel better than I did when I was in high school. This feeling gives me hope that no matter what lies down the road, I have a much better chance of fighting it if my body is conditioned for the battle. Having gone through this dramatic lifestyle change, I know now what I want to do with the rest of my life. I want to show people that becoming fit is not only possible but extremely rewarding to your body and your mind. I use to measure success by the position I held, the car I drove, and the house I lived in. I now measure my success by how I affect the people around me. And if we as a team can change peoples outlook on their daily lives with regard to not only how they look but also how they feel . then my life will be a success! Lets get EnFused together!
