The project is set to be installed in about a month but so far Drew is great to work with. Drew came down to the property for the estimate meeting, listened to what had in mind and made a few helpful suggestions. At Down to Earth Designs they do both design and installation work. No matter who you use, landscaping is not inexpensive. But Down to Earth Designs bid was reasonable and in-line with the other bids we received. The bid was very detailed and professional and included a design plan as well. We dialed in the plans before he sent us a contact and final bid. Last week we had another really great meeting with Drew down at the stone lot to pick out materials. He's been very patient with all of my questions and emails. He's also a good family man and just overall is a great person to work with.

We're now two and a half years in to using our patio and we love it. The sloping was pretty complicated, and I am happy to say that it sheds water really well away from structures on three sides. My chief complaints were mispoured concrete such that our steps are uneven depths and heights -- instead of tearing out the mispoured concrete from the subcontractor that they hired the Down to Earth team went ahead and hardscaped over, resulting in several obvious filler spacers and the uneven risers. The team had also forgotten to account for stair materials so we had a cost overage in excess of 10% which was a bit of a bummer. Toward the end of the project it was clear that they wanted to move on to other things, so getting them to wrap up sealing was tough. Overall we were pleased, but this company hasn't become our "go to" for future landscaping projects.
Down to Earth Designs's reply
I am not sure what project this is referring to. I cannot recall a client having issues with any concrete subs or at least any issues brought to our attention at the time. As for sealing, we never seal hardscapes after initial install. We always wait several months to a year at some times to allow for efflorescence to occur.

Drew responded quickly and was on time, reasonably priced, and was the only person who bid that understood how dogs affect the landscape and how to design a dog-proof solution with dog safety in mind. I had wanted to hire him for another job but he was too busy!

I am unable to rate the work of Drew Rini because after initially indicating he was interested in my project he did not respond back to my emails. I would have appreciated at least some type of response even if it was to say he was not interested in the work. My other experiences with thumbtack had been very good so this was disappointing.

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Make sure to do your homework, not only on the contractor but with what you are looking to accomplish. Come to the table with some ideas or information about yourself and lifestyle. Not everyone is a designer, thats probably why you are here. Just make sure to engange yourself in the process and have fun with the design and construction phases. It should be fun, it is your home.
