I try to be fair for both the customer and myself.

Get a feel for what they need and the price range they want to accomplish the task. Ask lots of questions, both you and me!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been doing light plumbing, electrical, and carpentry for about ten years. Mostly around my own house where mistakes could be tolerated. I'm happy to say that doesn't happen often now.
