About
My name is Joseph Engel, I am a Denver based performer and educator with more than 20 years of experience. I love helping students of all ages and abilities to discover the joy of music and the cello! I am classically trained with many years of experience in rock and pop music.
I work regularly as a recording artist, composer, and event musician. I am a member of the Ft. Collins Symphony, assistant principal cello for the Billings symphony, and a substitute cellist for the Greeley Philharmonic and Boulder Philharmonic.
I offer in-person lessons in Denver Colorado, and virtual lessons to anyone in the world!

I am an adult beginner just starting my journey with cello. I feel as though I found not only an extremely talented cellist, but moreover, an instructor who is able to teach complex techniques in an manner that is easy for a novice such as me to understand. Joe not only has an innate professional quality, but is also able to make learning exciting and fun. I find that important when pursuing a new endeavor and trying to figure out one's own path, especially with a musical instrument. Lessons are informative and fun. You won't be displeased with Joseph Engel.

I started cellolessons with Joe remotely about a month ago. Joe is an excellent educator who exhibits a lot of patience with a beginner like myself. His focus on building good fundamentals is a defining characteristic that is so important and will surely pay off as I progress on the cello. Highly recommend!

I absolutely love taking lessons with Joe. I didn’t play an instrument as a child, just had regular music class. I decided to start playing cello this year at 41-years-old.
I started off taking in-person lessons at a local music academy, but I found myself becoming bored and disheartened. I wondered whether I had made an expensive mistake renting a cello and signing up for lessons. A friend of mine suggested I try a different teacher, so I decided to try Thumbtack for the first time. Joe got back to me very quickly. I decided I should try out a couple teachers to see what was the best fit.
Joe was the best, hands down. He is encouraging, but also points out specific things that I am doing wrong and that I need to work on more before the next lesson. I love learning and practicing the cello now. Choosing Joe was a great decision.

The first lesson can be up to 1 hour and is always free! After that, lessons cost $68 for a 60-minute lesson and $40 for 30 minutes.
I offer discounts to students who want to take lessons with me but cannot afford my rates. If this is you, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask for a discount!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I hold multiple higher education degrees in music, including a Master's in Cello Performance from Denver University. I have had the pleasure of studying with some of the top cellists in the country, including Matthew Zalkind and Daniel Morganstern. I have been a working cellist since I was 18, and have experience with event music (weddings, dinners, private parties, etc.), orchestras, and chamber ensembles, as a recording artist and writer, and producer.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I began playing violin at 9 years old before switching to cello at 10. At 16 I was awarded a full scholarship to Jacksonville University to do my undergraduate work, where I earned a double major in Cello Performance and Music theory, before going on to finish my graduate work at Denver University. Being a musician has allowed me to pursue all kinds of work in my career, including recording, teaching, and live performance.
