I provide private piano lessons to students of all ages and abilities. Classically trained, my teaching encompasses a solid understanding of proper technique, beautiful tone production, expressive playing and reading music. Those fundamental skills contribute to versatility and to the successful performance of the abundant keyboard literature spanning a variety of musical styles. Alongside many years of experience in effectively sharing my musical knowledge, I create a positive and nurturing learning environment with an enthusiastic, patient and encouraging approach. My commitment to understanding students' goals, learning styles and musical preferences ensures they will feel motivated to learn to play the piano and take pride in their accomplishments.
Weekly private lessons are conducted in my home studio located in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose.

We found out about Karin's teaching talent through a co-worker of mine. When I spoke to Karin about our daughter we were extremely motivated by Karin's prior teaching history and educational achievements. One can certainly feel comfortable on these fronts, but one never knows whether their child will stay interested in learning to play an instrument. Karin has an inherent gift at instilling such interest. Our daughter has been taking lessons for over one year and not only has she stayed interested, she has gone so far as to compose her first piece! Many of us have taken music lessons as children, but it takes a unique person to inspire a child to go beyond the wrote music practice. Karin has this ability to 100% connect and our daughter is now passionate about learning the art of music. Our daughter was ready to move on from a basic keyboard six months ago and Karin also helped us distill down, from the overwhelming number of options, an appropriate next-step purchase. This journey has been extremely special for us. We highly recommend Karin to other parents as we have seen our daughter flourish.

Karin Swanson is a specially intelligent, energetic individual and gifted musician. She excels as a pianist and is an exceptional composer with a passion to teach others. As a former student of mine in the very difficult Comprehensive Musicianship class (musicianship integrated with theory) at San Jose State University, she was among the very top of her class. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Tuition rates are as follows:
45 Minutes Weekly $320/month
60 Minutes Weekly $415/month
Tuition is not calculated as an hourly fee for services rendered because it includes much more than the lesson time spent with each student.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I assess the level of a student by parental guidance and an interview lesson. I can then determine the most appropriate method and musical materials for teaching the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from San Jose State University and a Master of Music degree in Composition from the University of Michigan.
