Introduction

I provide guitar lessons, specializing in classical guitar. I offer one-on-one weekly lessons to help you in your musical pursuit, whether you are a new beginner to the guitar, or an experienced player. I graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Performance, and greatly enjoy passing on the knowledge I've received on to others. You will find my teaching style patient and fun, yet professional and with your best interests in mind. My goals include teaching proper technique, musicality and ultimately, a love for the guitar.

Hi there!! I have been taking beginner guitar lessons from Michael for several months now and I'm quite pleased so far!! I am an adult with an interest in learning to play but with no prior formal training. Michael's patient manner and sense of humor is important to me as a student and makes for enjoyable weekly sessions. I particularly like his mix of theory based learning and practical, hands on type exercises. For me, that works well. Most importantly, I work full-time and try to balance family/life obligations and I've never felt pressurred if there's a week i have not been able to get as much time-in on the instrument as I would have liked. I am learning at my own pace and that's critical for me so I stay motivated to play. I play for relaxation and enjoyment and I think Michael brings that mix of strengths into his teaching program. Lastly, he is a VERY accomplished musicion who can play anything, classical, folk, rock, jazz, etc. I interviewed a number of different instructors and I'm glad I met up with Michael. PS, If you want to learn to play the violin Michael's wife is also an accomplished violinist!! Cool, huh? Cheers, Ben.

I started taking guitar lessons with Mike last year, as a beginner. Over the eight months I've been playing, I've noticed major improvements in my technique. Mike has taught me everything from new chords and scales to fingerstyle and flatpicking. He uses a blend of exercises and guided practice to help you grasp the material, and will show you ways to learn and play various songs of your choosing. Additionally, I have a much greater understanding of musical theory as a result of my lessons (arpeggios, cadences, rhythm, the ability to read music, etc.). I should mention that Mike is patient, flexible, and accommodating...traits that I really appreciate, given the fact that I'm a working adult and have many other demands on my time. All in all, Mike's a great teacher and I highly recommend him.

How did you get started doing this type of work?
My parents were both school teachers, and people often joked how I would become a teacher too. I vehemently said 'no way!', but I guess I didn't realize teaching guitar would be so much fun! I definitely have the 'teach others' gene passed down from my parents - I love seeing people go from not being able to do or understand something, and then being helped along to the point where they CAN!
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Shop around - don't necessarily settle for the first teacher you find. There needs to be a good chemistry between you and your teacher, helping ensure that you have a positive learning experience.
