Hi, I’m Patricia Babin. I’m a retired biochemist with a PhD in biochemistry. I passionately love teaching chemistry.
Last year I had an unusual opportunity. A local private school urges advanced students who are taking honors chemistry to study independently for the AP chemistry exam. A group of 11 students from the school hired me to teach them AP chemistry. The students did extremely well on the AP exam: 3 of the students scored a 5 on the AP exam, 5 of the students scored a 4 on the AP exam and 3 of the students scored a 3 on the AP exam. I taught them AP chemistry focusing on the concepts that the test focuses on because those are the concepts students need to know in order to be prepared for college chemistry and to be prepared for the exam. I can help your son and daughter do well on the AP chemistry exam.
I’ve been tutoring for the past 9 years and I won awards for teaching while I was in graduate school. If you think all online education is the same, think again and be sure to read my reviews on this website. I tried multiple platforms to find what worked best for my students and didn’t stop until I found something great. I've invested in the equipment and software necessary for smooth, online tutoring. For my students, it's as if I'm in the classroom with them, writing on a whiteboard. That's really important - I want them focused on the concepts - not distracted by problems with online learning!! All of my students receive a pdf copy of the whiteboard we worked on during their session within 5 minutes of the end of our session. Also, if you'd like, I can record the lesson so that your student can listen to the lesson again in case they missed anything. I store all their recorded lessons for the entire course. There is no extra charge for this.
I've actually had people say to me that they believed someone with a PhD would be less able to communicate chemistry or biology to high school students. They thought a PhD would present concepts at too high a level. The truth is that, if you have a PhD, you better understand the subject matter really well. And if you understand it really well, then you should be able to communicate it in simple terms. I think that's why I'm able to help students so much. I really love my subject matter, I really understand it and I can explain in simple terms.
I never tell my students to just memorize chemistry. My motto is that students should understand chemistry so they don't have to memorize it. It's impossible to memorize your way through honors or AP chemistry, but that's what you're forced to do if you have a teacher or a tutor who doesn't give a great explanation.
