Born and raised in northern China, Zhijuan Guo speaks standard Mandarin. She earned her bachelor's degree in Chinese Language. After graduation, she did an internship in the kindergarten (with a dual language--Chinese and English--immersion program) of Western International School of Shanghai. Later her keen interest in language and culture brought her to France where she worked as an au pair for a French family with two adorable children(aged 3 and 5 at that time), and had taught them to speak basic Chinese. Since then, she has been teaching Chinese to learners from all over the world for over 15 years. Zhijuan moved from Shanghai to New York about 9 years ago. After living and working in New York City for nearly a decade, Zhijuan recently relocated to San Francisco. She offers, mostly one-on-one, Mandarin instruction to students of different learning needs and of all ages (as young as 2 years old), in-person as well as online. As an avid reader, a world traveller (from France she went on travelling all over Europe and South Asia), with her passion in language and words and her extensive experience in individual language training through over 12,000 tutoring hours, she believes in the power of one-on-one teaching in Chinese learning, and her strength lies in reaching students of all ages in a direct and personable dynamic and understanding students on an individual level.
Here is a student's testimonial:
Juan is a great teacher. She is both demanding and flexible. To learn Chinese and the subtle distinctions between tones, you have to repeat the words again and again. Juan sets the pace. She also knows when to give you a rest. She will then tell you the story of a character, or take time for small talk, provided it's in Mandarin. She is very good at creating conversations based on what is here and now. . . At the end of a class with her, I was always eager to schedule the next one. I have made tremendous progress thanks to her dynamic teaching. --Joëlle Méric
