I wasn't offered many choices on new furnace models. I found the unit I wanted by talking with another company that had also bid for the project.
Could have planned better. The 3.5-ton unit I got was probably more than enough for the house, as it turned out I only had four ducts connected. I had asked for the 14" standpipe to be replaced but then learned that it wasn't a large-enough diameter to accommodate the new furnace, which would necessitate adding an extra intake vent in the furnace closet.
I was told my unit would be compatible with a Google Nest thermostat, but later I found out the power available in the wall was only 12 Volts whereas the Nest needs 24 Volts. To run power to it would have supposedly required running a wire along the outside of the wall to the thermostat. I think it should have been possible to run a new wire inside the wall given that the furnace is directly below the thermostat's location. I'm also not convinced that another wire was needed, since I had purchased a C-wire adapter for the Nest exactly because I knew I was converting from a single stage to a two-stage unit. I ended up going with a different thermostat which I will discard once I install the Nest myself.
Due to unforeseen complications with the installation, I was without heat for a night. The next morning I texted Joe, the person who had scoped the job and provided the estimate, asking him to come by and clarify the change of scope because the tech who was leading the installation did not have a very good command of the English language. He never responded.
Overall, this project was poorly planned and I'm not confident that the correct unit was installed or that the unit that is now in place was installed correctly. I will need to hire someone to inspect the work. Overall I was not satisfied with the service I received. After they got my business, I was left out in the cold (literally) when complications were encountered.
