Via Thumbtack, we entered a description of what work we needed to have done, was provided a list of matched vendors along with the average cost range we could expect based on the type of work we were looking to have done and the typical cost within our area was listed as approx $285 for each vendor listed. We selected Sean's company, checked availability for a free in-person estimate, and booked it for the next day. We received a booking confirmation msg for the standard removal of existing peeling off panels of seagrass wallpaper and repaint of a single primary bathroom and provided photos of the bathroom. Within a half hour, I received a message from this vendor that included a very high estimate (doubled of what Thumbtack had listed as the norm cost for our job and area) keeping in mind scope of work/ work site unseen. When I questioned why such a high quote based on photos only and without seeing our bathroom to determine what the job actually entailed? What justifies the quote being so much higher than what Thumbtack's range quoted for the proposed job while also pointing out that two of the four walls were almost completely covered with wall length mirrors, one wall contained a shower stall with very little wall space showing and the only wall that had the most wallpaper covered space was over a tub flanked by a single window on each side of it that had a large circular mirror hung over the tub so there was very little wallpaper removal and painting to do, yet was being quoted double than the average cost range listed? My questions were met with silence. My followed up message asked if we could still expect him to show up for our scheduled in-person estimate the next day? Again silence. A few minutes later we received an unexpected booking cancellation notification. If a vendor is not interested in taking on a project, they should just be upfront and honest with a customer rather than waste time of all parties involved. Very disappointed and unprofessional. Whenever I'm dealing with my own customers, I always remember two things: "You only get one chance to make a great first impression" AND "Word of mouth travels fast"
