The landlady informed my granddaughter on January 24th if she didn’t put in a higher fence, that her dog couldn’t jump, she would not renew the lease on February 1st. I looked on offer up and it lead me to THUMBTACK where I found Victor. He contacted me within a few hours. He was prompt, and did a great job on a WOODEN fence, however, that is NOT what we agreed on. The job was for a rod iron fence that would be done with pre-fab metal panels and a 3’ wide walk through gate. It would be a total length of 27’ x 5’ high. There were multiple photos of what was needed. He said “yes” he could do this and would have it completed within 3 days. Before he started the job he went and spoke to my granddaughter at which time she again showed him a picture of what we were expecting. He claims he asked her about a wooden fence at some nearby church and that she agreed (she did not) to him installing one like it instead of what he and I had agreed on , however that is when she showed him the other photo and he said ok. She gave him a deposit of $500 for materials so he could start. When my granddaughter got home from work he had installed a 6’ WOODEN fence instead! This was a major issue for multiple reasons - 1- it blocked access to a small playground area where her 2 year old godson plays all the time 2- she would ni longer be able to see him when he was playing there 3- it was NOT what the agreement was for 4- her landlady SPECIFICALLY demanded the fence match the other part of the pre-existing metal fence in the front and opposite side of the yard 5- this occurred 2 days before her deadline to have it completed or be evicted I called Victor to speak with him and tell him this was not what we had agreed to and needed to be corrected and no further payment would be made until it was. He first said he couldn’t do it because he didn’t have a welder. I told him he would not need one since it was to be done using panels. Next, he said he would have to find somewhere to get them from. I gave him the name, address and phone number for a place he could buy all the supplies at a VERY reasonable price (less than the $500 materials deposit he was given). I texted him when the shop was open since it did not have set hours. Ultimately he had stopped responding to my text or calls. What I DIDNT know is my granddaughter had also communicated the need for correction of what he had done. He was responding until she finally asked him for a refund of the deposit. He stopped responding to her after that. Fortunately, she was able to contact a gentleman she had previously spoken to and he came that evening to start. Said he wouldn’t need ANY deposit or payment until the job was fully COMPLETED. The next day the correct fence had been installed. Ultimately the total costs was $600 more than what it was supposed to be (including the $500 paid to Victor). If you want a wooden fence, might be ok with having Victor do it. If not, then do NOT hire him! I didn’t think he was dishonest until he went completely against our agreement then tried to blame my granddaughter for it 😠!
