It is very difficult to properly assess this teacher. We only had three lessons and most of the time was spent setting up Zoom. I believe he had the potential to be a good teacher but failed to approach the learning process in a manner that was consistent with my ability or interest. I am 73 years old and have been playing music since I was about 10. I consider myself to be an “advanced intermediate” guitar player. The teacher asked me what type of music I liked and he selected Country soloing to teach me. He never ascertained what I was already capable of or what I wanted to learn; only what he wanted to teach me. After the third lesson, I discussed the issue with him and after a point, he stopped communicating.

Learn Music from a Pro! Jeff Brent (online only)'s reply
In Tom's initial introductory blurb about himself, he wrote: "I have not had much success with guitar teachers so I may be a little skeptical." Our lesson began with this attitude of skepticism and continued along in that same manner. I feel that I was not given a fair chance to bring him the knowledge that what he wanted. He originally told me that he was interested in 'technique'. He said his three main styles of music are: Country, Rock, and Jazz. Country technique is different from Rock technique, and Jazz technique is way different from both of those. Jazz is something that you spend years working up to. Flipped a coin and chose Country technique. Maybe we have different definitions of the word "technique". He hasn't had much success with guitar teachers, and I guess I'm no exception. Better Luck Next Time!

I began taking Guitar lessons with Jeff Brent in April 2022. I am 76 and figured there was no way for me to learn the Guitar. Most of my experience was trying self taught. Didn't work, only picked up bad habits. Heard about Thumbtack, figured I would give it a shot. There were several instructors to choose from. I choose Jeff because of his introduction "Learn Music From a Pro". That he is "A Pro". Jeff makes lessons interesting and easy to follow. He is patient, always on time. There were several times I was unable to attend a session and he made sure I could make up my time. I found Jeff to be very patient, Professional with his student's. He has the knowledge, ability and desire to pass on to his students. I'm truly grate full I choose Jeff Brent. He, without a doubt is a "Pro" and enjoys what he does. If I were to choose a instructor again, I would certainly pick him. Thank you.

I've played guitar off and on since my teens, but was self-taught. I had the basic skills to play along with most songs, but no understanding of how to build a song or a melody. In the year I've spent with Jeff, he opened my eyes to music theory in a way that is instantly applicable. I am much more comfortable improvising around a chord progression. I can see the patterns in songs and how and when to utilize different scales and modes. Jeff's book with Schell Barkley, Fingering Mastery - scales and modes for the guitar fretboard, demystifies these topics with images and patterns that are different from any other theory book I've seen. His backing tracks provide the foundation to apply these patterns, and his demonstrations during lessons bring them together using examples from standards and popular songs. Last thing - Jeff has an incredibly strong understanding of world music and music history, much of which is earned through decades of playing live music around the world. I find this adds a lot to the experience of a lesson with him. I recommend Jeff without reservation.

I've been working with Jeff a little over a year now - not only am I learning a broad range of guitar skills, but I'm having a blast doing it! Jeff is super knowledgeable, with massive experience in music and performance to draw on for examples, stories, practice tricks, and more. My partner is even planning to sign up for bass lessons! I highly recommend Jeff for any kind of music lessons, beginner to advanced. Come with a dedication to music and fun, and you won't be disappointed.
