FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My stated rate is $60/hr, and I offer discounts based on your needs. Edit: Any student who signs up in January 2024 will get an automatic $20 discount.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Almost all my students have been asking for help with math, so I will answer in that context. First, I determine what my student needs help with. Issues can include difficulty understanding Common Core, missing a prior topic and needing to be retaught, not knowing how to approach a problem, not showing their work, etc. I find that math anxiety plays an oversized role, especially for middle schoolers. My second step is to build rapport with my student to increase personal comfort and confidence in their abilities. Their are a lot of situation-specific tricks and shortcuts for solving math problems. My third step is therefore to gradually introduce these methods, starting with arithmetic, such as short division, and working up through simplifying fractions, mental multiplication for double-digit numbers, etc. I also use this opportunity to introduce historical methods for solving problems and how & why they worked the way they did. This has the added benefit of building my student's metacognition skills.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been substitute teaching and tutoring for the past six years, and completed my Masters in Math Education. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering, and worked in that field for several years.
