Mathew is an Awesome Teacher!!! He is very knowledgeable, personable, kind, patient and and has the most pleasant energy a teacher could ever have. He is great at reviewing the fundamentals of instrument playing and music technique and is really good at going back to reviewing the basics of the instrument and suggesting exercises to increase the quality of the sound when playing. He is very organized and makes the best use of his time, moving efficiently from one activity to another and is always making it a point to stay productive during the entire duration of each music lessons. In addition to that, he has a great love for music and is a great composer who shares his knowledge with his students from day one! He is doing an amazing job connecting with my daughter, taking time to get to know her and learn how she learns best to make the lessons fun and meaningful for her.

Matt is an amazing teacher and makes lessons interesting and interactive. He really cares about teaching you music styles that you enjoy and tailors your lessons to your level of music expertise. Matt listens to every player’s needs and is one of the most passionate musicians Ive been around. I play sax and piano with no prior guitar lessons or experience playing the guitar; however, i’ve had private instructors in my other instruments and Matt has been the most enjoyable instructor so far. He cares a lot about the student’s progress and learning experience and makes you feel like a friend and part of the music community.

Matthew has been my daughter’s guitar teacher for almost 6 months and she has progressed enormously since we started. They have their lesson in our backyard with masks on and we appreciate Matthew’s flexibility in these Covid times when we decided we did not want more screen time after a whole day of zoom with school already. Matthew is very professional, kind and clearly in love with music which inspires his students. Guitar lessons are something our daughter is looking forward to (which was not always the case with other teachers).

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I will chat with the student beforehand to see what their needs are and to get a feel of who they are. From this, I will come up with ideas as to where to start teaching.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's in Music Performance from Denison University and a MFA in World Music and composition from Calarts. I have performed all over Los Angeles and beyond in traditional Indonesian Music and my own music. I have written music for video games (Civilization VI) and for film (Leimert Park - Sundance 2018). I also work with artists to create music for art exhibitions and visual representations of song structures on canvas.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started teaching kids in my neighborhood. Friends kids or people who knew me. I then moved to Columbus Ohio and started working at a music lessons company. Since then I have moved to Los Angeles and been teaching and performing ever since.
