Introduction

My passion and speciality is teaching reading and spelling to students of any age. Although I am a fully credentialed teacher (24 years), my focus is using the Susan Barton Reading and Spelling System, emphasizing phonemic awareness, to guide ALL students to proficiency and, moreover, the joy of reading. This system is perfectly aligned to also address the most profound challenges of dyslexia. It's my passion to guide a student to full confidence in their ability to read and spell. In addition, I also love teaching English Language Development. I'm U.C.L.A. certified and am also an avid language learner, partially proficient in Spanish!

Ms. Aronson was my best teacher flat-out. During my homeschooling experience, Ms. Aronson was a supportive and enthusiastic teacher who gave me a love of learning. Ms. Aronson was my homeschool teacher many years back when I was in 3rd grade up until I was in 5th grade, I am now a high school freshman and would say that Ms. Aronson was my best teacher so far.

Elizabeth worked with at-risk students in my classroom, helping with reading fluency, comprehension, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, and reading strategies. Her loving approach helped create an environment where the children developed confidence in their abilities. Elizabeth came into our home 5 hours a week from K thru 5th grade. She taught home schooling to my daughter in subjects Math and English. Brianna was unable to attend traditional school. Brianna with the little amount of concentrated learning from Elizabeth was able to test on State testing at grade level and advanced. Elizabeth takes the child's interests and strengths to help expand and learn from them. Then with weaknesses she sneaks them into the lessons making them fun and positive without causing meltdowns and upsets with the challenging items. Brianna is able to attend traditional school and going into 10th grade and she enjoys learning. She received a wonderful foundation for learning from Elizabeth. Brianna is a STEM child and will be taking THREE AP courses, Algebra 2, and other grade level or advanced courses starting in the fall. Elizabeth became more than a teacher, she is now part of the family and life long friend to us!

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My fee is $40 per 60-minute tutoring session. The Susan Barton Reading and Spelling system recommends a minimum two-time per week schedule.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first step in working with a new student is getting to know him or her and letting them know about myself. I use the WIST (Word Identification and Spelling Test) nationally standardized materials to get a base-line understanding about where we will start. But, as always, my responsibility is making sure our atmosphere is easy-going so that students feel open and relaxed about any task. After that, which should take about one session, I will take about 20 minutes in the next session to share with parents/caregivers, etc., test results. Then, my student and I will begin the fun and gradual process of gaining phonemic awareness from the Barton program (multi-sensory). As we slowly build this knowledge, students begin to realize how competent and able they are and that there is nothing wrong with them. It's a joy to see my students begin to enjoy the wonderful world of reading!
