As a teacher and tutor with over 25 years of experience, I strive to understand what each student needs to get a better score on a standardized test or a better grasp of an academic concept. I believe it's important to adapt to the learning style that best suits each student.
Before we start the tutorial program, we'll have a half-hour session in which I work with the student to get a sense of their learning style and to determine whether we're a good fit. Some students need me to help them calm down and feel comfortable with a test or concept. Some students need me to be focused and strict, so I adapt my teaching style as necessary.
Once we've completed that initial session, if we're a good fit, we can set up a regular schedule. For test prep, I'll assign a diagnostic test and use the results to create a customized syllabus for that student's program. For academic tutoring, I will communicate with the student and parent about additional work I can send to bolster what the student is doing in school. After each session, I'll send a short progress report and assign homework that fits with the student's schedule and time demands.
For test prep, students who are able to complete two to four hours of homework each week will most likely achieve the greatest score improvements, but I also recognize that some students have very tight schedules, so I work with the family to maximize the effect of the time that a student has to put towards test prep.
I truly helping enjoy students excel, and I hope that my work helps remove some stress from parents as well.
