Joseph gave me the best price among the four tile experts I contacted. But unfortunately this experience gives credence to the adage, "you get what you pay for."
Joseph replaced the cracked tiles in my kitchen and hallway and they look fantastic. I appreciate that he went to Home Depot and bought some tiles after breaking one of my replacement tiles.
(FWIW: My husband believes Joseph deserves two stars.)
I am giving him three stars because I think he did a good job on my tiles and did some additional work to make up for the mess he made. But overall he has a low quality of care -- the equivalent of a doctor being highly skilled while having poor bedside manners.
Joseph told me from the start that replacing ceramic tiles would be very dusty. You have to saw away the old tiles and lift them up with a jack-hammer-type tool.
Despite the tornado of dust, he does not wear a mask and nor equip himself with a vacuum. Why not! Breathing in dust like that day after day can't be good for his health. Another handyman who worked for me brought his own vacuum as part of his arsenal.
I never could have imagined how far and high the dust would travel. Even though the tile work was done in the hallway and kitchen, my entire living room, dining room, kitchen counters and furniture were covered with dust. I asked him why he doesn't cover up everything or ask the client to put away things on the counter.
First, he said it's impossible to cover up everything. Later, he said he didn't think it would create such a mess and that it was a lesson learned.
I accept that. Everybody makes mistakes. I wasn't mad. I offered to vacuum the floors. He wiped up most of the dust on my furniture and floors yet a lot of dust remained. He replaced missing grout on other tiles and replaced an additional tile to make up for the mess.
He partially filled a crack in my fireplace. He said he was doing that as a bonus to make up for the mess because that service wasn't included in his quote.
However, it should have been because I told him in the Thumbtack chat the three things I needed done: 1. Replace 11 cracked tiles in the kitchen and hallway 2. Fill in the cracks in my entryway and 3. Fill in the crack in the fireplace. He even told me buy a tile repair kit from Home Depot to fix the cracks. I also sent him a photo of the one I bought. (Our text messages back and forth would support my claims.)
Joseph filled the crack in my fireplace about halfway. When asked why he didn't fill in the crack fully, he said that the tube of putty was nearly empty and that there wasn't enough to fill the crack.
But that was a false statement. The tube was half full and I finished the job myself the next day.
Joseph left used paper towels and all of the components of the tile repair kit on my kitchen table, which is utterly unprofessional.
Professionals leave their clients' homes exactly as they found them if not better.
My advice: Hire Joseph if you want the job done cheap. But you will have to babysit him and clean up after him.
