Introduction
I’m your friendly, independent neighborhood tutor in Berkeley, Albany, El Cerrito, north Oakland, and Alameda. For online tutoring, I work with students from just about anywhere. Arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra I and II, and geometry: I work with students in Kindergarten and up to improve their comprehension of mathematical concepts and to help them gain confidence with mathematical reasoning. Writing composition and reading: I work with students to help them gain confidence in their writing. Together, we tackle writer’s block and improve grammar, sentence and paragraph structure, richness of examples, and composition. I also provide strategies to improve reading comprehension. College essays: I provide coaching to support students in the process of writing college entrance essays. Summer tutoring: I can help students stay caught up or even get ahead. My rates are competitive. My rate is $70 per hour, with discounts possible for multiple students or sessions per week, for proximity to me, or for tutoring online. I’m flexible about the location for tutoring.

Janet has been the primary tutor (english, math, social studies) for my two kids (7 and 10) for this past school year while we are temporarily homeschooling and it has been a wonderful experience. Janet is always on time and emails us detailed summaries of what the kids are working on every two weeks. She is a delight to have around and the kids look forward to school. She is very encouraging and kind but also holds the kids to a high standard. Both kids have had tremendous, accelerated academic growth this year. Janet has worked with the materials from our homeschool charter but added lots of her own materials as enrichment to put together an engaging and comprehensive curriculum. She has been flexible with scheduling. For my son's 4th grade California mission project she and my son baked a gingerbread mission together (she came in early, on her own time) and it was such a special experience. I cannot recommend her highly enough! BTW, I would like to also choose value and punctuality from the above list of qualities but could not pick all five. Janet definitely deserves all five!!

My daughter started Bishop O’Dowd this year and was really struggling with Algebra. We went through a few tutors before finding Janet and to see my daughters confidence level go up has been amazing. Janet is able to explain the concepts in a way that my daughter grasps the subject matter and understand the many rules of algebra. After going through several tutors, that is crucial. She is very patient and has been very flexible when we have tried to squeeze in an extra session or two before an exam. I highly recommended Janet. She is professional, punctual, and is able to teach the how and why something is done. I think it helps that she was once a teacher.

Janet is not only a tutor, helping with homework and tests - she is a teacher. She was able to teach math to a student who could not understand her teacher.

Thank goodness we found Janet. She is the perfect tutor!! Down to earth, great with kids, trustworthy, thorough, and just fantastic. My son was behind in math and within a few months was at grade level and more importantly loving math! He gained skills and confidence and this was because of his work with Janet.

With summer coming up fast, I thought I'd post a recommendation for our son's fantastic tutor, Janet Stephens. Our son, now a 9th grader, has been working with Janet since the spring semester of 8th grade (over a year now). Initially, our son wanted some extra help with Pre-Algebra that we were not able to provide. But once the summer came, he continued his weekly sessions with Janet, but with much less of an emphasis on math, and much more on reading comp and writing. Now that we are 3/4 thru 9th grade, Janet has continued to help him with Algebra, English and Biology. She is so versatile! And along the way, she has helped to coach him to identify study strategies that work best for him as well as guidance on how to be better organized. His grades have improved and best of all, he enjoys working with her. She is incredibly patient and is a very clear communicator. Finally, we find Janet so easy to work with. She is willing to come to our home for tutoring sessions. And she is as flexible with her hours as she can be, something we greatly appreciate since our son plays sports and there are sometimes conflicts with our weekly evening sessions. And lastly, I really appreciate her weekly reports about the work that she and my son worked on the night before -- they are quite detailed so they allow us to follow up with him on any remaining prep work for upcoming tests, quizzes, or major deadlines.I can say with absolute confidence that we highly recommend Janet!
