Introduction
I have a diverse set of interests and experiences that have influenced my development as a musician and educator. I'm trained as a classical cellist and have studied in the BM and MM programs at The Juilliard School. As a freshman, I started an organization of actors, dancers, and musicians that has led arts empowerment workshops in Tanzania for six years, an experience that solidified my passion as an educator. This year I have been working for Yo-Yo Ma's Silk Road Project in an arts integration program in Flushing, Queens. Academic pursuits include a senior thesis on using music therapeutically for post-traumatic stress disorder and three years of intensive Arabic language studies at Columbia University at the U.S. Department of State Critical Language Scholarship Program in Morocco. All of these experiences have shaped me as a human being and educator alike. 1- Helping a student develop problem-solving skills at the cello. The first step toward musical growth is for the teacher to guide the student with specific steps on how to improve, but I love being able to provide the tools for the student to be able to figure out some of these steps at home while practicing. 2- Watching students grow over time. Musical improvement is a slow process and takes a lot of hard work, but it is great to see how well students progress over time. Students of mine have recently gone on to attend Interlochen and Shinx summer music programs. 3- Seeing a student fall in love with music. I didn't love playing music at first but over time found myself playing more and more because had begun liking it more and more. It's a great feeling to see a student fall in love with music.

For the last two years, Patrick has been my most awesome cello teacher. He is gentle and fun and really understands how to help me improve my technique and how I practice. When we started, I was on Suzuki Book 3. Last weekend, I played in a concert with the String Orchestra of Brooklyn. I am more dedicated to my instrument after working with him, he makes me want to play better.

I have taken cello lessons with Patrick for less than a year. I started as an adult student who's a zero cello experience beginner. Patrick helped me to work on the Suzuki book 1, and I'm very surprised at how much progress I have made from the first class. Patrick is one of the best teachers I've ever had. He teaches with his professional attitude, his long-time accumulated music expertise and his outstanding academic background. Having class with him is a highly interactive process, where he always responds with effective answers or solutions to student's questions, or problems student encountered during the practice. His passion and profound insight about music, culture, as well as humanity also helps his students to get more interested and engaged in the instrument as well as their playing. All in all, I'm very thankful to Patrick and feel really lucky to have him as my first cello teacher. What he brings me is far more than those very helpful cello techniques, practice tips, or music knowledge, but a wonderful journey to explore the cello world.

There are many good teachers who are fluent in their area of expertise, but there are few exceptional teachers who are fluent AND take the time to tailor their teaching method to the needs of a particular student. Patrick is an exceptional teacher. I have never touched a stringed instrument in my life and was intimidated by the thought of starting lessons as an adult. However, Patrick's open, patient, and perceptive teaching style alleviated any concerns that I had. Patrick's lessons have enabled me to progress faster in cello than I ever thought I could. I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone who is interested in pursuing cello lessons.
