Introduction

My illustration goal is to explain what is happening and tell the story. In my work, I strive to express and embellish the written word with pictures. I am good with facial expressions, having worked extensively as a courtroom sketch artist. I have studied body language and interpretation of facial expressions, which enables me to create work that accurately portrays the story. For a book cover, the goal is also to draw attention to the book, to advertise it, and give the reader an image to help their imagination create a story in their mind. I love creating art. I enjoy the creative process, the thinking involved, the sketch to finish, and all the different mediums I can use. I love having different styles, which keeps doing my work exciting. I also enjoy people and the back and forth that comes with every job. We form a business relationship that comes from being open and communicative with each other. Even though many jobs are not face to face anymore, there is a bond and respect that forms. I appreciate honesty and clearly expressed visions that result in a job well done.

I hired Caludia to execute a book cover and five interior illustrations for a mystery novel. They were uniformly excellent and added much to the story. She was attentive to the dramatic flow of the novel, responsive to suggestions, and communicative as the project moved forward. Her artistic imagination was able to capture the author's intent admirably. I would hire her again without hestitation.

Claudia Wolf illustrated my book, Mitzi and Joey, and I am delighted that I found her through Thumbtack. Her illustrations are unique, and since the time frame is in the 40's, she reflected the 'look' of that period in the clothing and furnishings, etc. Mitzi's image on the cover of the book will attract anyone who is a kid or a kid at heart.

Claudia Wolf produced the full color illustrations for a board book my small firm is publishing. She is an exceptionally talented and thoroughly professional artist. She began the project by carefully reviewing the text her pictures would support. We then discussed what the author and I felt the illustrations should be during which Claudia had many excellent suggestions. After taking us through the process of sketches, line drawings, and color selections she produced illustrations which totally support and truly enhance the humor theme of the book. She then designed the page layout to meet the precise requirements of the printer. And when the layout had to be modified for an e-book she worked directly with the e-publisher to quickly have it ready. Claudia completed the project within the time she estimated and her fee was exactly as her contract represented. Equally important, Claudia proved to be absolutely delightful and wonderfully straight forward to work with. I will most certainly want her to do any future illustration work needed.

I needed an artist to do my second book cover and Claudia was a good fit. She was able to mimic the style I wanted, added her own touches, and created an excellent eye-catching cover that I'm very happy with. She kept me updated frequently through email and finished the project quicker than I anticipated. She formatted it perfectly so it uploaded into the publisher's software with no problems. Professional.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Each project is quoted differently, due to the many different requirements of each project and client.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I talk with a new client and take notes as to what they need. I will do a sketch, and show the client, to see if we are on the same page. Then I go to the color finish phase. If changes are necessary, I make them and make sure the client approves. There is an additional step in children's books. Before sketch phase, I do a "thumbnail" sketch phase, which is a page of tiny sketches in sequence, to show the flow of pages, usually on one or two pages.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I went to the Paier School of Art, where I excelled at painting and illustration. I am always learning new things and keeping up on new programs.
